TO***CO ROOT MOUNTAINS FIRES

2 active wildfires continue to burn in the To***co Root Mountains in southwest Montana.

Cloudwest Fire:

Size: 1,156 acres
Containment: 0%
Cause: Undetermined

Located 9 miles northeast of Sheridan and 12 miles east of Twin Bridges in the Indian Creek drainage, the fire was reported via the Alert West camera system. The fire is burning in thick subalpine fir timber with a heavy dead and downed fuel component. Given the critical fire weather conditions associated with the predicted RED FLAG WARNING, the fire spread rapidly.

A large helicopter dropped water as ground crews responded. Crews positioned themselves in Indian Creek and the North Willow area to address any spots and fire movement.

The fire is burning at 8,100 feet in elevation in the To***co Roots Mountains, just northwest of the Bivens Creek Fire.

Bivens Creek Fire:

Size: 1,932 acres
Contaiment: 0%
Cause: Undetermined

Located 11 miles northeast of Alder and 10 miles east of Sheridan, the fire was reported on the evening of August 13th. Firefighters responded, assisted by water bucket drops from helicopter 4MA.

Fire behavior was active immediately and increased early the next day, given the critical fire weather conditions that prompted RED FLAG WARNINGS. Within one hour and without the influence of the sun's solar heating, fire behavior increased markedly with subsequent perimeter growth.

NEW FIRE ALERT
Location: 3 miles south of Norris, Montana, 3 miles north of Ennis Lake.

Start Date: August 16, 2025
Cause: Lightning
Size: est. 3,500 acres
Containment: 0%

FROM DNRC: There is an evacuation warning in place for all residents in the area between Bradley Creek, Shining Mountains West, and US Highway 287 (between mile markers 61 and 64). If you are living or staying in this area, please be prepared to evacuate should conditions change.

The McAlister Fire started yesterday and exhibited extreme fire behavior through the night, with large runs and tree torching. This prompted evacuation warnings for the area and closure of Highway 287 north of McAlister. Cooler temperatures and less dry conditions this morning have moderated fire behavior, allowing for the reopening of Highway 287. Residents in the area are still under an evacuation warning.

The Montana DNRC is currently managing the fire, which is burning on private, state, and BLM land. Fuels in the area are primarily open grass dotted by small clumps of trees. Crews and resources today are working to continue building a bulldozer line around the fire, further secure the edges of the fire perimeter with both dozer and handline, and utilize aviation resources to drop water on the hot spots. The forecast today is for cooler, wetter conditions, which will assist suppression operations.

Resources currently on the fire include: two type 2 helicopters, a scooper, 1 hand crew, 2 bulldozers, a grader, and numerous engines.

Low end chance of severe thunderstorms later today (Aug 17) across parts of Montana. Storms are expected to initiate over the higher terrain of SW MT this afternoon and push E/NE onto the plains.

Main hazard will be strong, erratic winds with these storms. There is a small chance for larger hail in early storm development in a localized area from Billings north to Lewistown.

Fire concerns will also be heightened with any dry thunderstorm with lightning.
