Sometimes the biggest family debate started with something as small as the evening television schedule.
The newspaper had been folded on the coffee table, but nobody could remember where the television listings had gone.
One person checked the kitchen table.
Another searched through the magazines.
Someone lifted the sofa cushions as if the missing paper might somehow be hiding underneath them.
The television sat quietly in the corner, waiting for everyone to figure things out.
A few minutes later, the coffee table was covered with opened pages and folded newspapers.
The schedule finally turned up underneath a magazine that had already been checked twice.
Everyone laughed, and the search ended as quickly as it had begun.
