This is a screenshot from a video I shot at the JazzHouse in Copenhagen in 2011. It's Albert Heath, whose nickname was Tootie. It dawned on me that I could do a Classic Vinyl Jazz show with an unusual theme: jazz musicians whose nicknames are more familiar than their given names. Stix Hooper. Dizzy Gillespie. Sweets Edison. Duke Ellington. And others whose nicknames are so familiar they are inseparably tied to their jazz persona. Jeff "Tain" Watts. Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. Charlie Parker (Bird). Sassy Sarah Vaughan. T***s Thielemans. You get the idea. (Well, I got it first!😀) Have some more suggestions?
