Taíno People Honored by Massachusetts State Senate
The Massachusetts State Senate has made history — becoming the first state legislative body in the United States to officially acknowledge the culture and heritage of the descendants of the Taíno people, the Indigenous ancestors of Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Caribbean.
Advisor Matunheri Angel Cosme, representing Regional Chief Felipe Rosario, explained the depth of this recognition:
“Massachusetts is saying that the descendants of the Taíno people are here, that they still practice, and that we are honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day.”
This acknowledgment is far more than symbolic. It is a declaration that the Taíno — once declared “extinct” by colonial historians — are alive, visible, and unbroken.
🌿 A Living Legacy Reaffirmed
For centuries, colonizers told us that the Taíno had vanished. Yet the people of Borikén, Quisqueya, and beyond carried their blood, their language, their spirituality, and their pride forward — in our faces, our food, our music, our words. This Senate resolution restores historical truth: we never disappeared.
It also provides official validation for Taíno communities who continue practicing their traditions across the diaspora, from the Bronx to Bayamón. Recognition from a state institution strengthens their ability to preserve language, ceremony, and art — a vital step in the broader decolonization of identity.
⚖️ Symbolism and Sovereignty
This act isn’t just cultural; it’s political. By affirming the existence of Taíno descendants, the Massachusetts Senate has opened the door for other states — and Puerto Rico itself — to follow. It challenges the colonial narrative that Indigenous identity in the Caribbean belongs to the past.
When one state honors Taíno people while Puerto Rico remains under colonial rule, it exposes the contradiction of American democracy: acknowledging Indigenous survival while maintaining territorial subjugation.
But every recognition like this plants a seed. It shifts the collective consciousness — from erasure to remembrance, from occupation to self-determination.

Pueblo Taíno Reconocido por el Senado Estatal de Massachusetts
El Senado Estatal de Massachusetts hizo historia al convertirse en el primer senado de los Estados Unidos en reconocer oficialmente la cultura y herencia de los descendientes del pueblo Taíno, los ancestros indígenas de Puerto Rico, Cuba y el Caribe.
El consejero Matunheri Angel Cosme, en representación del Jefe Regional Felipe Rosario, explicó el significado profundo de este acto:
“Massachusetts está diciendo que los descendientes del pueblo Taíno están aquí, que aún practican, y que estamos honrando el Día de los Pueblos Indígenas.”
Este reconocimiento va mucho más allá del simbolismo. Es una declaración de que el pueblo Taíno — declarado “extinto” por los historiadores coloniales — está vivo, visible y sin romperse.
🌿 Un Legado Vivo Reafirmado
Durante siglos, los colonizadores insistieron en que los Taínos habían desaparecido. Pero el pueblo de Borikén, Quisqueya y más allá cargó su sangre, su lengua, su espiritualidad y su orgullo hacia el futuro. Esta resolución senatorial devuelve la verdad histórica: nunca desaparecimos.

⚖️ Simbolismo y Soberanía
Este acto no es solo cultural; es político. Al afirmar la existencia de los descendientes Taínos, el Senado de Massachusetts abre la puerta a que otros estados — y Puerto Rico mismo — sigan el ejemplo. Desafía la narrativa colonial que pretende que la identidad indígena caribeña pertenece al pasado.
Cuando un estado de la Unión honra al pueblo Taíno mientras Puerto Rico sigue bajo dominio colonial, se revela la contradicción de la democracia estadounidense: reconocer la supervivencia indígena mientras se mantiene la subordinación territorial.
Pero cada reconocimiento como este siembra una semilla. Mueve la conciencia colectiva: de la negación al recuerdo, de la ocupación a la autodeterminación.
