Most of my confidence comes from "sink or swim" moments,

Some were initiated by others wanting to give me confidence.

As a leader, instilling confidence in your people can be challenging.

However, giving people the trust to take on difficult tasks and make things happen can be incredibly rewarding.

It is important to provide these opportunities of "sink or swim" in order to build self-confidence.

I know I would not be where I am without them.

In your next task given to you by a leader, focus not on the results...

BUT

Your boldness in action and completion of it.

Humility is an underrated leadership trait.

Because nobody wants to be lead by someone who believes they are superior to others.

Simply, humble leaders understand what it means to be human.

In turn, they fosters trust, respect, and a healthy culture among their people.

Today!

Embrace humility by being good with who you NOT

THEN celebrate your weakness as a strength in someone around you.

You will create a collaborative and productive environment.

The act of recognition itself is a form of encouragement.

Leaders should consistently recognize employees when they perform their job well.

This reinforces positive behavior and instills confidence in their role.

Leaders, it's time to trust your team to build confidence in them!

The hardest part as a leader is handing off a task they know perfectly well how to do.

But it will limit your team, your success, and overall growth

When your people gain confidence in themselves,

They need you less,

And more gets done!

That only happens when they have a chance to fail.

It's hard to trust people in business.

Especially if you have been burned before...

But here's the code to decipher whether or not someone is worth trusting.

Evaluate 3 things in a person's life and business practices...

- What sacrifices do they make
- What people do they esteem
- What values do they live out

1. What sacrifices do they make

Do they sacrifice other's time and effort for their agenda or success? Or...
Are they willing to put aside their own self-interests for the benefit of the team?

2. What people do they esteem

Do they admire people of low character but monetarily successful? Or...
Do they surround themselves with people of high character who challenge them to be better?

3. What values do they live out

Do they make choices solely based on personal gain or self-promotion? Or...
Do they make hard choices consistently based on integrity, courage, and transparency?

Trustworthiness is built on the consistency of one's behavior and the alignment between their words and actions.

What is your BS meter? How do you discern if someone is trustworthy?

For many years, comparison was killing me.

Until I started combatting comparison by doing less.

Uh? Let me explain...

I did less of things:

- that I "think" I am supposed to do
- that drain my energy
- that distract me from my goals and priorities
- that make me wish I was someone else

Instead:

- I became okay with failure and disappointing others
- I scheduled more activities that I enjoy
- I made choices that I will be grateful for in 10 years
- I unapologetically acted like someone I respect

Thinking about why you do things in life can create authentic mindsets and motivations.

Take you toward who you truly are and...

A path towards living more intentionally and passionately.

Do you compare your life to someone else's life?

Or living out your own?

Not all leaders are good leaders,

But all good leaders have a handful of the same characteristics.

Last weekend, I observed my nephews incorporating a simple but paramount one...

To develop your people, you have to be willing to give them responsibility with authority.

So, how did my 6 and 4 year old nephews do this?

Well, it all came down to a sq**rt gun...

The older one was using it and needed something else before proceeding.

Before he left to go get this vital object for his activity,

He made sure his younger brother wouldn't steal his sq**rt gun for his own purposes.

Instead of barking an order at him like: "don't touch it, or else",

He said, "we have to protect this, so don't let anyone else mess with it."

Well played, right?

(Side bar, was I the "anyone else"?)

His statement was profound...

By communicating equal ownership over the sq**rt gun

And authority in the completing of the activity,

He created, not only a willing participant, but a galvanized partner,

And in turn, he set a high standard for his brother to excel to.

Versus...

If he just gave him the responsibility of "don't touch" or "don't mess this up".

He would have only communicated distrust and superiority over his brother.

Causing a low motivation to complete the task, and

Providing his younger brother with more motivation

To do the opposite of what he needed.

(Little bros know what I am talking about)

In turn, only giving him the opportunity to fulfill the lowest expectation possible.

So when developing leaders within your organization, remember...

A galvanized partner is more productive and loyal

than a salaried manager or worker.

How are you developing your people?

Do you struggle to give your best employees authority to complete a task?
