On my way home from the farmers market this morning, I stopped at a Shell gas station to fill up. But they were completely out of regular gas. Yes—totally out! So, I drove two more miles down the road to another gas station... and ran out of gas on the way. (I know what you're thinking: I should’ve gotten gas earlier. You're right, but I didn’t—so here’s what happened next.)
My baby Myla was crying, and it was extremely hot outside. I called a tow company to bring gas, but they said it would take an hour to get to me. So, I called and asked if a police officer could come so we could sit in their air-conditioned car while we waited. Officer Larison from Kalamazoo Public Safety showed up, and we were so thankful to cool off in her car.
She told me to cancel the tow truck. Then she called another officer and asked her to bring a gas can. I wish I had gotten that second officer’s name. After they filled my car with gas, Officer Larison followed me to the gas station to make sure I made it there safely.
Thank you both for helping out this overwhelmed mom today!
While I was in the car with Officer Larison, we talked a bit, and I asked if she wanted to hold Myla. She smiled the biggest smile and started chatting away. That moment made me think about everything people say about police these days. They’re not just officers—they’re regular people too. These men and women truly want to help. They care. Don’t let a few bad ones make you forget about all the good ones out there.
This is what real police work looks like. This is why they matter.
