“Women are crazy!!” She just wants attention.” “Slut.” “You better be careful or you’re just going to get r***d again! *followed by roaring laughter at the lunch table in high school* “Switching your class schedule is too much work, you’ll just have to deal with it.”

Crying out for help and coming out about being a survivor of sexual assault & domestic violence, I heard those words. A lot. I came out to my school counselor. I came out to two of my history teachers. I also had a responsibility to save this guy’s life—who was a friend of mine—because my late brother threatened to kill him. (He really meant it, too.) And, until the day my brother died, he never found out his name.

Last night I met a new friend, Mark. He works security at the motel I’ve been staying at, and we listened to Johnny Cash in his car as he told me his life story: He’s from Saint Claire county, Alabama, and had a best friend, Steven. Steven got arrested for ma*****na, and the cops said he could go free if he sold someone out—and he did: His best friend, Mark. Mark has four felonies, all non-violent drug charges, for possession of ma*****na. So, I decided to write a song about him while in his truck: “Mark My Words.” He gave me his CD of Johnny Cash’s Greatest Hits when he dropped me off at my room. I’ll never forget Mark.
