Defending the XFL Announcement
By R.j. Ciancio
The clock counted down: 3,2,1 and it had arrived. Now to see what all the hype around the XFL announcement was about. I immediately clicked on the YouTube video, eyes glued to the screen. When the video was over I felt underwhelmed. Why did I feel this way? Let’s go back around 18 hours ago, a new XFL logo begins circulating the forums that was supposedly from a XFL YouTube video. With this time, I got look over the new look and digest it.
Let’s go back to the reveal. After initially feeling like I and other XFL fans were teased I took some time to look the website overhaul. A whole new look, new mission statement or new vision as the league says. That’s a major overhaul which I love. The logo has a cleaner look and perhaps most importantly, distances itself from the logos used in 2001 and 2020. This was no minor announcement and yet, there’s still a feeling of emptiness. Why?
I think I figured out why I was still initially so underwhelmed with the big update from the league. It’s because I already got to see the logo. While all the other information is vital to XFL 3.0, it’s not something I can digest immediately and have a strong reaction to. With the logo you can have a strong reaction and get all your information without having to dig around plans read the website to understand it’s meaning. Another reason I wasn’t thrilled is I wanted news about cities and teams. That’s a great want but you can’t announce everything at once, lessening it’s impact and overwhelming me with information. It took the 2020 incarnation months for the identities and players to be picked. I’m craving the return of the XFL and that caused a knee jerk reaction.
So what is to be taken away from this announcement. There is much more information than it seems, and we, the fans need to take our time to digest everything. We want the XFL, and they want to put out the best product they can. All of this is a sign that the XFL is doing things right and despite how annoying it is right now, the wait will be worth it.
UPDATE: Right as this is being posted, it looks like the XFL has some new merch!
