Birmingham Planning Board members on Wednesday, December 10, held a pre-application discussion relative to a nine-story mixed use development proposed for the long-vacant corner of Maple and Woodward in the Triangle District, proposed by the Beztac Company.

The proposed development would consist of two floors of underground parking for a combined total of 309 cars plus additional parking spots in other parts of the project. Parking plans also include 200 public parking spaces.The first floor of the development would contain over 15,000 square feet of retail space, with floors two through seven for 197 apartments and floors eight and nine for 27 condos that would be sold.

A Bloomfield Hills man, while in a movie theatre at the 200 block of S. Old Woodward in Birmingham, allegedly had a bag with $600 in cash stolen on Saturday, December 6, from the theatre bathroom.

The man reported the theft to Birmingham police, who stated no suspects had been identified after an initial investigation, but the alleged victim later decided not to continue on with the case.

A man from Montreal, Quebec, was cited for disorderly conduct in Birmingham the night of Friday, November 28, after he allegedly took a swing at a security guard.

According to the police report, officers arrived at the bar, located on the 100 block of Willits, after the man swung at the security guard while the guard was trying to remove him and his girlfriend from one of the stalls in the women’s restroom.

The Oakland Circuit Court Judge now assigned the case involving a lawsuit by the city of Birmingham to prevent the sale of The Community House (TCH) issued a denial this week of the city’s request for an ex parte temporary restraining order (TRO) and injunctive relief to keep the building at 380 Bates Street in the downtown area as a community center.

The city originally filed suit on November 25 in response to a November 3 announcement by officials for The Community House Association of plans to evolve into the Birmingham Area Community Foundation to carry on the original mission of the community group, and the closure and sale of its building in the city effective July 1 of 2026.

Birmingham officials at the close of the day on Thursday, December 4, were still awaiting a decision by the Oakland County Circuit Court on a November 25 request by the city for a temporary restraining order on the possible sale of The Community House (TCH) on Bates Street in the downtown area of the city.

A woman has filed a Bloomfield Township police report on Friday, November 28, of the theft of $1,551 from her purse while she was shopping at Hollywood Market at 1525 Opdyke Road in the township.

The victim stated that she entered the store with $1551 cash in her purse at approximately 3:10 p.m. When she went to check out, approximately 3:30 p.m., she discovered that her purse was unclasped and the money was gone.

Birmingham woman, worrying she was getting scammed, reported calls she received from a court in another district asking her to make multiple small payments on behalf of a relative.

The woman told officers that she was expecting the call regarding payment on behalf of her relative. When she received the call, she attempted to make the $1,500 payment which was initially flagged as fraud. The supposed court representative told her to split the payments, which raised suspicion with the woman who then contacted her bank.

The Bloomfield Township Police Department, with assistance from the FBI and the Troy Special Investigations Unit, was able to make an arrest of a suspect who had made threats against the Oakland County GOP and a Michigan Republican Youth Chairperson.

On Saturday, November 22, the Bloomfield Township Police Department was contacted by representatives of the Oakland County GOP reporting threats made against the GOP and the Michigan GOP Youth Chair, Krish Mathrani.

An argument in Birmingham between two men the morning of Saturday, November 15, led to an arrest after one of the men pulled a gun from his car and put it in his waistband, showing it off to the other.

The report from Birmingham police states that the two were in an argument because one of them had not moved his vehicle. Eventually, things escalated to the point where one of the men pulled the gun.

Birmingham Fire Chief Paul Wells, currently on paid administrative leave from his position with the city, has filed a federal lawsuit against the city, along with city manager Jana Ecker and assistant city manager Mark Clemence, claiming violation of his civil rights and of the Michigan Whistleblower Protection Act.

Wells was first hired by the city in 1998 and served as an emergency medical technician and firefighter and has moved up in the ranks during his 27 years of service with the city. He was sworn in as chief of the department and emergency manager in August of 2019.
