STATEMENT IN RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL CUSTODIAN DAY — OCTOBER 3, 2026

Today, we recognize National Custodian Day and express our appreciation to the hardworking men and women who help maintain clean, safe, healthy, and welcoming environments in our schools, hospitals, churches, government buildings, businesses, and other public facilities.

Custodians are often among the first to arrive and the last to leave. Their work extends far beyond sweeping floors, emptying trash cans, and cleaning restrooms. They play an essential role in protecting public health, maintaining facilities, preventing the spread of illness, and ensuring that the spaces we use every day remain functional and safe.

In our public schools, custodians are especially important. They help create learning environments where students can concentrate on their education and teachers can carry out their responsibilities. Yet their contributions often go unnoticed until something needs attention.

National Custodian Day is also an opportunity to recognize the importance of fair compensation, adequate staffing, proper equipment, safe working conditions, and the dignity of every worker. Appreciation should extend beyond words to how employees are treated throughout the year.

To every custodian working behind the scenes, whether in Birmingham, throughout Alabama, or across the nation, thank you for your dedication, professionalism, and service.

Your work matters. Your contributions are valued. And your service deserves recognition and respect—not just today, but every day.

October is Farm to School Month!

Farm to School connects students with local farms through school meals, nutrition education and hands-on learning. It helps young people discover where their food comes from while supporting Alabama farmers and communities.

A Farm to School activity might include tasting a locally grown fruit or vegetable, learning about Alabama agriculture, planting a school garden or meeting a farmer.

Throughout October, we will share simple ways schools, families and communities can help young people explore the journey from farm to table.
