The city of Hoover is having its first Community Mental Health Day this weekend at the Hoover Metropolitan Complex. See details:

The Hoover Fire Department is getting two new trucks decked out with Hoover and Spain Park high school colors and mascot names. The "Hoover Buccaneers" truck will be based at Fire Station No. 11 in Trace Crossings, while the "Spain Park Jags" truck will be based at Station No. 7 in Inverness. The city of Hoover had a stellar year in 2022 with strong economic growth and is poised to continue adding new amenities to bolster the quality of life in the city, Mayor Frank Brocato shared in his annual state-of-the-city address Wednesday. Read more of what he had to say:

Hoover High School baseball coach Adam Moseley will miss the 2023 spring season, as the AHSAA Central Board upheld the original ruling Wednesday following an appeal.
Hoover High School and head coach Adam Moseley lost an appeal to the AHSAA on Wednesday morning, meaning Moseley will not be able to coach this spring.
The Finley Committee is now taking nominations for the 2023 Finley Awards for outstanding character, given each year to a Hoover City Schools employee and one senior at each of the city’s two public high schools. Read more, plus the link to make nominations:

The Hoover City Council on Tuesday night rezoned the Hare Farm in Bluff Park from an R-1 residential zone to a planned residential district to be used primarily as an event venue. See details:
David and Teresa Hare want to use the nearly 9-acre property for events such as the Bluff Park Christmas Fair, a seasonal pumpkin patch, marketplace events, weddings, corporate parties and birthday parties.
Three music groups from Hoover City Schools were chosen to perform this week at the Alabama Music Educators Association professional development conference in Birmingham. See more details:

All offices for the city of Hoover will be closed on Monday, Jan. 16, 2023, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. However, the Hoover Recreation Center is scheduled to be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, and the grounds at Aldridge Gardens will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. See more:

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is holding a blood drive at the Hoover Recreation Center on Monday, Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. See more:

The Hoover City Council on Tuesday plans to vote on whether to authorize an investment banking firm to prepare documents so the city can borrow an estimated $60 million to $90 million for a new interstate interchange, performing arts center and other capital projects. See more details:

The Hoover Board of Education on Monday night honored a team of six seniors from Spain Park High School who recently won the Youth Judicial State Mock Trial Tournament in Montgomery. Read more:

Hoover resident Art Meripol shot hundreds of rock, blues, jazz and country concerts in the 1970s and 1980s as a photographer for various newspapers in Arkansas and Texas and as a freelancer. He photographed music artists such as B.B. King, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Merle Haggard, KISS, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Jon Bon Jovi, AC/DC and Fats Domino. Read more:

A lot of international students who get help from the Blazer Kitchen at UAB weren't getting the protein they need because the food pantry didn't have the halal meat their Muslim faith requires. The Birmingham Islamic Society stepped in to fill the need:
With the Birmingham Islamic Society's help, since July, about 150 of the 750 or so UAB students who use Blazer Kitchen receive halal chicken each month.

What do you do if your pet is suffering and near death and it's hard for them to move or you want them to pass away at home peacefully? Dr. Lindsay Floyd of Hoover started a new business called Compassionate Crossings to offer people an option. Read more:

The Hoover City Council tonight approved an agreement with the state outlining how a new Interstate 459 interchange will be built just south/west of the South Shades Crest road overpass, to be called Exit 9. The estimated cost is $120 million, with the city picking up roughly half the cost. See details:

Firefighters will be es**rting Saint Nick throughout city streets in their shiny, red fire engines between roughly 3 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. as they help him scout out the neighborhoods.
Lucy Helland, a sixth-grade student at Bumpus Middle School, this fall for the second year in a row won the Miss Yellowhammer State Pr***en pageant. She moves on to a national pageant this summer but recently has been busy raising money to buy pillows and blankets for foster children. See more:

Two teams from Hoover this year won their second straight championships in a row in the Jefferson Shelby Youth Football League. See details:
The fourth grade Hoover Bucs defeated the Vestavia Rebels to claim a second consecutive title, and the third grade Hoover Bucs beat the Spain Park Jags for a repeat championship.
Seventy-four percent of Americans participating in a survey conducted for American Family Care said they plan to require masks at holiday gatherings. Read more about the survey and other interesting statistics from it:

The Hoover City Council tonight agreed to borrow $2.56 million to pay for two new fire trucks the council agreed to buy earlier this month. See details on that and other actions taken:
Council members considered paying cash for the trucks, but Chief Financial Officer Tina Bolt advised a loan would work better in the short term.
