Eastern Borders Drawn by Geographical Comparability
(Edit)I feel like it would be more intuitive for Appalachia, at least the central part, to be a state itself. So rather than each state getting a small chunk of Appalachia the mountains themselves are the state and the people. West Virginia, pan handle of Maryland, and eastern Tennessee, are likely more similar than Chesapeake area Maryland and the Pan handle, or western Tennessee and eastern Tennessee. Aberdeen MD to Manassas VA are almost part of the same sprawling contiguous urban/suburban capital region, more alike than Cumberland MD and Salisbury Maryland. What do you think?
Draw a line through Bald Eagle State Forest down to Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest and call it Appalachia Mountain State. Give eastern Shore Maryland, New Jersey to Delaware making it into the Mid Atlantic state. NOVA, Virginia Beach to Maryland. So that Maryland becomes the Chesapeake State.
I separated eastern and central Maryland despite it all being Chesapeake bay region because if it weren't for the Bay Bridge the two populations would be physically separated, also the characteristic homogenous sprawl of central Maryland contrasts the flat farmland of eastern Maryland.
Alternatively, the Coast of North Carolina down to Georgia could be made into New Chile, and all the western parts and what remains of Virginia all goes to the Mountain state where the foothills begin.
