Earlier today, I heard that one of my musical heroes passed. His name is Chris Barbosa. Though we worked among many of the same industry people, our paths did not cross much. Regardless, he would have an impact on me that resonates to this day.
Talented people can create sounds or can write songs with hooky melodies.
Chris brought both those worlds together on his own or with collaborators.
One night a long , long, long time ago, I saw him editing a song that was not yet released titled , "Give Me Tonight" at Unique Studios in Manhattan, NY.
As one member of the Latin Rascals, Albert Cabrera and I knew how to manipulate other peoples sounds like true masters, but what Chris Barbosa and Mark Liggett were doing was from scratch. Another Level. A new approach. They tested the technology with engineers like Chris Lord-Alge and Tom Lord Alge.
Inspiration coming from another latino had me revisit Unique Recording studios recording later that year, producing and co-writing "One Way Love", "Tears May Fall" by TKA and "Show Me" by the Cover Girls with a new level of confidence as a producer and song writer. Mainly because somebody I respected and looked up to beyond measure someone that was already paving that path. Along with mentors like Arthur Baker and Mark Kamins. I never asked for advice or words of encouragement from Chris, because when you are a teacher you don't have to roll like that. Those who want to elevate will watch, listen and learn. Chris, in case you did not notice in the past how much your existence meant to me, I hope you can see it from up there.
Rest in piece. Your brothers on earth want to do you proud, Tony
