U.S. manufacturing activity expanded for a seventh consecutive month in July, with the Institute for Supply Management’s Manufacturing PMI rising to 55.6%, up 2.3 percentage points from June and its highest level since May 2022.

Canada has implemented new countertariffs on selected goods originating in the United States. The surtaxes took effect at 12:01 a.m. Sept. 8 and apply at rates of 15%, 25% or 50% of the imported goods’ value for duty, depending on the applicable tariff classification. The Canada Border Services Agency said the surtax is assessed in addition to other duties that may apply.

The White House announced five Section 338 proclamations after Canada’s countertariffs took effect. Changes to the U.S. tariff list are scheduled to take effect Sept. 15, while new import bans on certain Canadian products take effect Sept. 29.
