The call came from a small church on the edge of town. A groundskeeper had noticed a dog hiding beneath an old bell that had been sitting outside for years.
When we arrived, she was curled tightly in the dirt, soaked from the rain and clearly exhausted. Someone had already left food nearby, but she barely touched it.
We thought she was simply scared.
Then she kept looking toward the darkness underneath the bell.
I got down on the ground and shined my flashlight inside. At first, I saw nothing. Then I noticed a tiny movement.
There were puppies tucked behind her.
Three of them, pressed together for warmth.
The mother immediately tried to stand when we reached for them. She was weak and shaking, but she kept herself between us and the puppies until she realized we weren't there to hurt them.
We carefully moved the puppies into a warm carrier, then helped their mother out.
Once she was beside them, she finally started eating.
At the veterinary clinic, we learned she was severely underweight and dehydrated. The puppies needed extra care too, but thankfully all four were strong enough to recover.
A few weeks later, the rescue sent me a photo of the family sleeping together on clean blankets.
The mother looked completely different.
Still tired, but peaceful.
I kept thinking about how she had found that tiny sheltered space and stayed there with her babies through the rain.
She wasn't protecting a place.
She was protecting her family. ❤️🐾
