Tears.😢💔

“A beautifully, tragically, heartbreaking written first-hand account. I am so, so sorry that you and your family had to experience something only nightmares are made of. I pray that each of you find peace and comfort knowing that your entire family that morning did everything y'all could to not only save yourselves, but to save each other. I don't have any words for the loss of Clay. I only have tears, but please know y'all are not alone. The world is morning with y'all for the loss of a child none of us even knew. It doesn't seem fair to have a miracle and a tragedy all together. Prayers for healing in the days, weeks, months, and years to come. 🙏 My thoughts are with each of you. 🩵” Kellye Bennett

On Friday I found out my colleague at Texas Monthly, Aaron Parsley and his family had been swept away by the floods.

He survived, but not all did. He asked to write about his experience and his recounting of what happened is so powerful.

Watch your wake
By: Randy Zellers
AGFC Fisheries Division

HOT SPRINGS — …all powerboats create a wake, and all boaters should be aware of the effects their manmade wave action can have…boats push a lot of water to the side as they plow ahead…

A rogue wave can toss a person’s boat around while docked at a marina...Boaters should always be aware of the wake they produce, regardless of designated areas…

“By law, you also need to be at no wake speed (under 5 miles per hour) if you’re within 100 feet of a dock, pier, anchored boat or other structure unless a contrary speed limit is posted,” Jeremy Risley said. (Black Bass Program Coordinator)

In addition to the danger to yourself and other boaters, a hazardous wake can cause damage to vessels and property at marinas and boat docks. Damages caused by a boat’s wake can come back on the operator of that vessel if it’s proven their boat was responsible for the wake that caused the damage.

Boat operators are liable not only for property damage caused by their vessel’s wake, but also for any injuries or fatalities resulting from a capsized boat due to the wake, according to Joe Huggins, AGFC Hunting and Boating Safety Program Coordinator.
