The true End of an Era for music video broadcasting as the MTV channels that actually played music…have gone silent after 44 years! 📺🎶

( MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live were closed. The flagship MTV channel will continue to operate, focusing on reality programming (e.g., Jersey Shore, etc.)

The final video played? “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles — the very first video MTV ever aired on August 1st, 1981.

This station was such a huge part of my childhood!
I remember racing home after school to watch Dial MTV, waiting to see if your favorite song cracked the countdown. No streaming, no playlists —Just loud guitars, big hair, and music that hit hard. MTV was how we found music!

And you definitely made sure to stay up late with Riki Rachtman on Saturday night for Headbangers Ball! 🤘

Although the station became less about music and more about reality shows over the past couple of decades, I am SO glad to have grown up watching MTV when it was truly a “Music Television Station”…if MTV raised you too, this one hits hard.💔📼
