When Makoché Recording Studios opened it was recognized by the leading industry magazine, Mix, as a "Hot New Room" of the year. Makoché is a new music company inspired by ancient traditions. The name Makoché (ma.ko.chay) comes from the Lakota word for the earth: maka. The word makoché refers to the land, all that is in it and the interdependency among all living things. The music presented by Mako

ché is influenced by Native American culture, both traditional and contemporary. Our recordings are produced in a world-class, 3,000 square foot, artist-friendly recording facility we've built in the center of the Dakotas. One might think of it as a remote, isolated location but we feel that here one can still touch the center of all things and hear the voices of a rich and living culture. http://www.makoche.com/

The Densmore Project is named for ethnomusicologist Frances Densmore of Red Wing, Minnesota, who visited Standing Rock from 1911 to 1914 and recorded traditional songs on a hand-cranked, wax cylinder recorder. The selections had been passed down for generations and some were already more than 100-years-old. Densmore documented the work in her book “Teton Sioux Music,” which contained additional stories and insights into Lakota/Dakota life and became a touchstone for learning about the culture.

The Densmore project re-introduces the songs and uses technology to make them more accessible for a new generation of Native singers and educators. Yellowfat has involved traditional singers to record the songs anew and indigenous knowledge-keepers to interpret the culture of the time.
