City of Bismarck Christmas Tree collection will be January 5 through January 15, 2026, on your regular scheduled garbage collection day. The Christmas trees collected are recycled. They are taken to the Bismarck landfill and ground into wood chips.

Before placing your tree out for collection reminders:
• Remove all lights, ornaments, and stands from the tree.
• Make sure the tree is not wrapped in any plastic or placed inside a plastic bag.
• Christmas trees will be picked up on the regular scheduled collection day.
• Christmas trees will be picked up at the regular collection point.
• Apartment Complexes should set Christmas trees by the dumpster for collection.
• A separate truck will collect the Christmas trees to be recycled.

City of Mandan Announces Temporary Road Closures for New Year, New Light Firework Show

The Mandan Progress Organization, in partnership with the City of Mandan, is notifying residents and motorists of temporary road closures and traffic impacts related to the New Year, New Light New Year’s Eve Firework Show at Mandan High School on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.
To ensure public safety during the fireworks display, full enforcement road closures will be in place from 9:45 p.m. to approximately 10:30 p.m., coinciding with the duration of the show and immediate post-show clearance.

Road Closures (9:45 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.)
The following roads will be closed to all traffic during the fireworks display:
• Old Red Trail from 8th Avenue NW to County Road 1806
• 4th Avenue NW from Old Red Trail to the south entrance of Mandan High School
• South access road of Mandan High School from 8th Avenue NW to 4th Avenue NW
• No Parking will be enforced on 4th Ave NW from Old Red Trail to 24th St. NW and on Old Red Trail.

Detour Information
A signed detour will be in place routing traffic around Mandan High School via:
• Old Red Trail → 24th Street NW → County Road 1806 → Old Red Trail
Motorists are encouraged to follow posted signage and directions from law enforcement and traffic control personnel.

Parking & Event Access
• Mandan High School Parking access for ticket holders begins at 7:00 p.m. All Attendees parking at Mandan High School must have a ticket. Walk-up spectating is allowed and that area can be found in front of the main entrance to Mandan High School.
• Following the fireworks show (approximately 10:30 p.m.), motorists should anticipate higher-than-normal traffic volumes in the area surrounding Mandan High School.

Additional Traffic & Safety Notices
• A temporary speed reduction will be in effect on County Road 1806 from 27th Street NW to Old Red Trail.
• Motorists traveling on Interstate 94 between the Mandan Avenue and Sunset Drive interchanges should be aware of possible visibility impacts during the fireworks display.
o Parking on the shoulder of Interstate 94 is illegal and will be enforced.
• Individuals choosing to view the fireworks from surrounding areas are reminded to:
o Be respectful of neighborhood driveways
o Avoid obstructing normal traffic flow
o Refrain from parking on private property

Event Overview
New Year, New Light is a large-scale, professionally produced New Year’s Eve firework show designed to safely welcome in the new year while supporting community causes. The event includes a coordinated pyro-musical experience and enhanced safety measures coordinated with local law enforcement, fire, and public works departments.

North Dakota Santa Run Postponed to Saturday, December 20 Due to Extreme Cold
Mandan, N.D. – The Mandan Progress Organization has announced the postponement of the 2025 North Dakota Santa Run, originally scheduled for Saturday, December 13, due to dangerously cold temperatures and extreme wind chills forecast for race day.

With participant, staff, and volunteer safety as the top priority, the in-person event has been moved to Saturday, December 20, 2025, with all race activities, street closures, and event logistics adjusted accordingly.
“We are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all runners,” said Matt Schanandore, Executive Director. “Postponing the race allows us to uphold our safety standards while still giving participants the festive holiday experience they look forward to each year.”

The Santa Run will begin at 4:15 p.m. on December 20 and will start and finish on Main Street next to Dykshoorn Park under the glow of the Mandan Holiday Lights on Main. The event raises funds for Hope Manor – Sober Living Homes and supports addiction recovery programs in the community.

Rescheduled Street Closures – Saturday, December 20
To ensure a safe and enjoyable race experience, the following temporary road closures and parking restrictions will now be in effect on Saturday, December 20:
Street Closures & Restrictions
• Main Street from 3rd Ave NW to 6th Ave NW will be closed from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
• No parking will be enforced in this Main Street closure area during the same timeframe.
• The south side parking lane of Main Street from Dykshoorn Park west to 10th Ave NW will be posted no parking from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
• At 4:00 p.m., Main Street traffic will be restricted between 6th Ave NW and 10th Ave NW to allow space for the start of the race.
• 10th Ave SW from 3rd St SW to 7th St SW will also be posted no parking for participant safety.
• Runners will travel through neighborhood streets using 8th Ave SW and 9th Ave SW between 1st St SW and 7th St SW.
Access & Detours
• West Main Street access will remain open for those visiting the Morton Mandan Public Library, including for packet pickup.

Main Street Closures Planned for the 2025 North Dakota Santa Run – Saturday, December 13
Mandan, N.D. – The Mandan Progress Organization will host the 2025 North Dakota Santa Run in downtown Mandan on Saturday, December 13, 2025, beginning at 4:15 p.m. This festive 5K invites participants of all ages to run or walk through the holiday glow of Main Street—dressed head-to-toe as Santa Claus—all in support of Hope Manor – Sober Living Homes and local addiction recovery programs.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable race experience, several temporary road closures and parking restrictions will be in effect:

This position is responsible for the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and the protection of life and property.

MAJOR DUTIES

Patrols the city to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations.
Responds to calls for service, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing persons searches, public service duties, stranded motorists, and others.
Conducts preliminary investigations into traffic accidents and other incidents, including interviewing victims, complainants and witnesses, gathering information and evidence, and securing crime scenes.

Provides assistance and backup support to other officers and emergency service providers as necessary.
Assists motorists.

Mandan Seeking Volunteers to Serve on City Boards

Sept. 29, 2025 – The Mandan City Commission will soon consider appointments beginning in 2026 for positions and seats on boards that assist with city governance and community development. Applications are being sought for 20 positions on 10 different boards or committees.

Interested individuals can apply online at cityofmandan.com/boardapplication for their desired appointment. Members of the business community and residents are encouraged to apply by Oct. 31 or until positions are filled.

Airport Authority. One position with a five-year term ending in 2030. Members of the local business community and residents are eligible to serve. A knowledge of aviation is helpful but not required. Provides input on planning, maintenance and management of the Mandan Regional Airport – Lawler Field. Meetings are typically held six to nine times a year, normally at noon on Mondays at the airport.

Architectural Review Commission. Two positions with three-year terms expiring Dec. 31, 2028. Appointees are to be residents of the city, business owners/operators in the city, or owners of property within the city. Expertise in the design and construction industries, engineering or related professions is helpful. Architecture Review Commission consideration and approval is required before any commercial building is constructed or its exterior is altered. Meetings are typically the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m.

Code Enforcement Appeals Board. Four positions with three-year terms expiring Dec. 31, 2028 are available. Reviews code enforcement violation appeals and meets on an as-needed basis. Members must be Mandan residents.

Community Beautification Committee. Three positions with terms ending in 2028. Residents or representatives of businesses that own property in the City of Mandan. Helps formulate and coordinate programs, projects and policies that enhance the aesthetic appearance of the community. Meets the second Thursday of every other month at 7:30 a.m.

Growth Fund. Two positions with three-year terms expiring in 2028. Members may be representatives of the business community through ownership or employment with a Mandan business or Mandan residents. Makes recommendations to City Commission related to applications for assistance to businesses desiring to expand or locate in the Mandan area. Meets as needed depending on applications for incentive or assistance programs.

Parking Authority. One, four-year term expiring in 2029. The representative must be a downtown business owner or representative. The committee is responsible for monitoring the status of parking availability and providing input to the City Commission, Police Department, Public Works and other City departments regarding enforcement, signing, maintenance and rental fees. The committee also helps develop solutions to parking issues that promote customer access to businesses. It meets as needed.

Planning & Zoning Commission. One at-large position with a four-year term expiring in 2029, and one at-large position with a five-year term. Must be residents living within city limits. Considers plats, zone changes, annexations, development plans and other planning related issues. Meetings are held the fourth Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m.

Renaissance Zone Committee. Three positions with three-year terms ending in 2028 representing the real-estate sector. Two positions may be representatives of the business community through ownership or employment with a Mandan business or Mandan residents. One position must represent the financial sector in Mandan. Makes recommendations regarding applications for property and state income tax exemptions for qualified investment in the purchase, rehabilitation, new construction and lease of commercial and residential properties in a 35-block area of downtown plus a non-contiguous area along Memorial Highway (the 2300-2500 blocks) in accordance with state and local regulations. Meets as needed to consider applications.

Special Assessment Commission. One position is up for consideration for a term ending Dec. 31, 2031. The Special Assessment Commission determines the amount of benefits in improvement districts from street, utility and other public construction projects and properly assesses these costs to properties within the applicable district. Basic mathematical skills and familiarity with the City’s special assessment policy are helpful. The commission meets two to six times a year, and compensation for this position is $35 per meeting.

Visitors Committee. One position for a three-year term is available. Members may be representatives of the business community or Mandan residents. Makes recommendations regarding applications for funding assistance related to travel and tourism facilities within the city. A portion of Mandan’s 1% restaurant and lodging tax revenue is set aside for tourism or towards the purchase, equipping, improving, construction, maintenance, repair, and acquisition of buildings consistent with visitor attraction or promotion. Meetings are held depending upon funding requests, generally once or twice per year.
