Mesabi Metallics is evaluating Kentucky as a potential site for an integrated steel facility using DRI. The company has registered in the state under Mesabi GreenIron, hired a top lobbying firm and posted employment ads for leadership positions in the state.

The company is permitted for value-added facilities on Minnesota’s Iron Range, and said it is continuously looking at potential options in Minnesota, Kentucky and other states.

The investigation was unanimously approved, and will be led by Councilors Paul Skrbec and Bob Pontinen, and city attorney Bryan Lyndsay, who was not present at the meeting.

Councilors declined to go into specifics of the inquiry, which followed a tense exchange about the city’s audit and access to information.
