Dear Todd,

The air in the east side of the city felt quiet this morning. Not even a plane overhead. It was eerie, it was peaceful. It was calming. I knew you were gone, and I wept.

You were the touchstone to guys like me. Your name belonged next to all the greats, but what made you different was the fact that you considered yourself one of us, and you looked upon us as one of you.

I don’t know how I landed on your radar, but being in your presence was a gift I didn’t know I would ever have. Sure, the gigs were fun. And yes, I had no problem if you wanted to play “Gloria“ for 20 minutes. But what I will really hang onto were the talks. Singing Jason and the Scorchers tunes backstage in Maryville. Talking about Kevn Kinney on the bus back from Lexington. Those words of encouragement when I needed them. Your kindness to me and my family.

When I first saw you in 2007 at Bonnaroo, you said if we were searching for a song and and we had the stones to move to East Nashville, there was a place for us. I found that place, and my life was forever changed, making art and flourishing in my own way in the community that you helped to foster. You took us under your wing just as the greats did for you, “Will the circle be unbroken…”

Whatever Tavern there is in the great beyond, I hope to meet you there along with Peter Cooper, Cowboy Jim, Skip, Kris, Prine, Jerry Jeff, Billy Joe, Jimmy, Mojo, Tepper, and Petty.
