Founded in 1946 by Fred Bumler as Bumler Heating & Cooling, Bumler Mechanical, Inc. has evolved from a modest residential HVAC service provider into a premier full-service commercial, industrial, and institutional mechanical contractor. What began in postwar Michigan as a small operation now spans across Michigan and beyond, with the company known for its innovative expertise in mechanical HVAC and turnkey building automation.

Fred Bumler built the company on integrity and precision. The company quickly expanded from residential jobs to institutional and light industrial projects. “By the time the second generation took over, it became clear that this wasn’t just a small family business – it was a legacy in motion,” said Randal, Fred Bumler’s grandson and current President of the company.

In an industry where women have long been underrepresented, Northern Michigan University (NMU) is leading the charge to inspire and empower young women to explore careers in construction and the trades. What began as a modest initiative in 2016 has blossomed into a series of dynamic, impactful events that are reshaping perceptions and opening doors for students across the region.

The mission of the NMU Women in Construction Day, organized by NMU Technology and Occupational Sciences professor Heidi Blanck, is to “encourage young women to consider careers in the construction industry via any given path.” It’s a one-day, hands-on event that introduces students to career options that are traditionally viewed as male-oriented. The construction industry offers one of the most gender equitable pay scales with nearly 99.1% pay equity between men and women. NMU’s Women in Construction Day aims to spotlight these promising trends and empower the next generation of industry leaders.

Located in Detroit’s Core City neighborhood, the Pope Francis Center's Bridge Housing Campus is a $40 million, 58,000-square-foot facility designed by Fusco, Shaffer & Pappas, Inc. and built by JSVig Construction Company to address chronic homelessness.

The architecture of the Bridge Housing Campus is grounded in the principle that physical spaces can support emotional and psychological healing. Rather than adopting a standard institutional approach, the design embraces residential elements like pitched roofs, warm materials, and calming colors to make the space feel welcoming and dignified.

At the heart of the Bridge Housing Campus are 40 fully furnished studio apartments that provide more than a bed — they offer autonomy, safety, and a fresh start. In addition to transitional housing, the campus includes a clinic staffed by Community Health and Social Services (CHASS), a commercial kitchen and dining hall, gymnasium, classrooms, a library, chapel, meditation rooms, and even a barbershop.

In late 2024, Michigan advanced its clean energy goals with the commissioning and completion of the Sauk Solar Park, a milestone in the state’s renewable energy journey. As the largest solar installation in the state to date, the project marks a major achievement for Michigan’s renewable energy efforts.

At the helm of the Sauk Solar Park project is DTE Energy, Michigan’s largest producer and investor in renewable energy. DTE’s CleanVision MIGreenPower program provided the foundation for the project, and Michigan-based Barton Malow served as the general contractor.

Sauk Solar Park was designed and constructed using advanced, modern engineering practices. Spanning more than 850 acres in Branch County, the park includes 347,000 solar panels — enough to power approximately 40,000 homes — each positioned to maximize solar energy capture throughout the year. The scale of the installation required meticulous planning and ex*****on.

For many, demolition conjures images of destruction — wrecking balls swinging into walls, dynamite reducing buildings to rubble, and waste piling up in landfills. Yet, for some, like Renascent, it represents something far more hopeful. It is about clearing the old to make way for the new. This evolving mindset is reshaping demolition across the industry, emphasizing sustainability and resourcefulness in an era when environmental responsibility is paramount.

The emerging practice of deconstruction offers a compelling alternative to traditional methods. Deconstruction involves carefully disassembling buildings to salvage materials for reuse. This approach preserves the embodied energy of materials—the energy originally invested in producing them—and reduces the demand for new resources.

Michigan’s first state-funded psychiatric hospital constructed in more than six decades, Caro Psychiatric Hospital features four distinct patient wings arranged in a “neighborhood” layout, along with a centrally located “downtown”-themed hub filled with amenities. The facility’s innovative design and therapeutic color palette challenge outdated perceptions of mental health institutions. State-of-the-art treatment spaces and advanced technology further empower medical staff to deliver high-quality care, positioning Caro Psychiatric Hospital as a beacon of hope for patients and families across Michigan.

The project’s success was made possible through the collaborative efforts of
Granger Construction Company, serving as construction manager, and Integrated Design Solutions, who provided engineering and design expertise. Their partnership brought together deep experience in healthcare construction and innovative facility planning, ensuring that the hospital’s unique vision was realized both functionally and aesthetically.

Once known as the “Kresge Fortress,” the former Kmart headquarters in Troy, Michigan, was a 900,000-square-foot symbol of retail dominance and architectural innovation. After sitting vacant for nearly two decades, the iconic site is now being transformed—thanks to a massive, multi-phase demolition led by Detroit-based Adamo Group. Beginning in November 2023, Adamo carefully dismantled the sprawling 40-acre complex, navigating environmental hazards and logistical challenges with precision, safety, and sustainability.

Every year, more than one billion birds collide with glass in the United States, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Birds often collide with glass because they can’t perceive it the way humans do. Architects and designers promote bird well-being through thoughtful strategies—such as incorporating patterned glass or applying tempera paint to building exteriors—that help birds safely navigate the built guidelines to protect birds.

“We’re trying to spread the word about the impact of bird-friendly glazing,” said Ross Winiemko, Project Manager for commercial window glazing contractor Curtis Glass in Troy. “You could have hundreds of birds (flying into glass and) dying at a given building. The hope is that (most) new project builds will consider bird-friendly glazing,” he said.
