Twenty-five years ago, the U.S. Green Building Council introduced a radical idea: what if buildings could be measured, rated, and improved based on their environmental performance? The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design system, better known as LEED, emerged from this question. Today, with the recent launch of LEED version 5.0, the program continues evolving to meet our most pressing environmental challenges. While previous versions refined and expanded LEED’s approach, v5 fundamentally reimagines green building for an era defined by climate crisis, social equity concerns, and circular economy principles.

The new $7.5 million Milliken Nature Center on Mackinac Island replaces a 50-year-old facility with a modern, fully accessible space designed to educate, inspire, and enhance the island’s visitor experience. Nestled beside the iconic Arch Rock—one of Mackinac Island’s most photographed landmarks—the center serves as a gateway to understanding the region’s remarkable geology, history, and natural beauty.

TowerPinkster, VIRIDIS Design Group, and Spence Brothers provided a fully integrated team for the nature center, incorporating construction, architecture, interior design, engineering, landscape architecture, and sustainability strategy to create a high-performance facility in a sensitive natural setting.

Belle Isle’s Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory is one of the oldest glass houses still standing in the country today. Designed by Albert Kahn and originally opened in 1904, the conservatory is one of Detroit’s most iconic and visited attractions, beloved for its year-round display of beauty and tropical environment.

Both phases of construction were overseen by Detroit-based Ideal Contracting, with architecture and design work done by G.H. Forbes Associates Architects and engineering by RSE Associates. The goal of the overall project was to make a number of structural and safety improvements, to enhance the quality and longevity of the facility, and to leave the iconic conservatory looking exactly as Michiganders have known it for the last 120 years.

The 2023 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Infrastructure Report Card graded Michigan’s infrastructure a C-, highlighting the need for ongoing efforts to assess, maintain, and repair the state’s existing infrastructure and buildings. The initial step for any such project is a condition assessment to help engineers and owners understand needs and prioritize efforts.

Drones cover more ground quickly while capturing high-resolution images of site conditions. They reduce setup, equipment, and personnel costs—no scaffolding or lifts needed for elevated exterior and interior areas—while minimizing coordination time and man-hours for inspectors and facility staff.
