Constructed in the late 1950s, South Foundation Hall has served as classroom space to almost every Oakland University student during their studies. As part of the transformation, a third floor was added–expanding the building’s footprint to approximately 86,300 SF. Originally home to OU’s first classrooms, the hall continues to serve as a vital academic hub, particularly for first- and second-year undergraduate students. The project team anticipates that the newly renovated South Foundation Hall will equip the next two generations of Golden Grizzlies with cutting-edge design, enhanced functionality, and the convenience essential for success—whether they are learning on campus or remotely. The hall is poised to remain a vital cornerstone of OU’s student life and academic experience well into the future.

The Ford Engineering Laboratory renovation is “a masterclass in adaptive reuse,” merging 20th-century architectural heritage with 21st-century innovation. The design preserved Albert Kahn’s iconic limestone façade and massive steel-arched windows, while introducing modern MEP systems, daylighting strategies, and open office environments that support Ford’s current and future workplace needs. The renovation transformed a historic landmark that once symbolized American automotive innovation, reactivating it as a central hub for more than 1,000 engineers, designers, and researchers. The Ford Engineering Laboratory reinforces Ford’s commitment to sustainability, not just in their vehicles, but in how they invest in the places where their people work.

Detroit Catholic Central High School in Novi aims to be one of the most highly respected and rated all-boys’ high schools in the nation. A key step toward this goal is the 57,000-SF George & Mary Turek Hall of Science. Blending nearly a century of tradition with cutting-edge technology, the $51 million Turek Hall of Science offers dynamic learning environments—including laboratories, classrooms, and collaborative spaces—that spark innovation, exploration, and leadership. The facility serves as a catalyst for discovery, where students engage in experimentation, strengthen critical thinking, and prepare to excel in the ever-evolving fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. October marks one of the most anticipated issues of CAM Magazine—our annual Project Achievement Awards. Each year, we highlight 12 outstanding projects submitted by CAM member companies, representing the best of Michigan construction. From this list of finalists, one project will be named Project of the Year at CAM’s Annual Meeting on February 3rd, 2026.

This year’s finalists reflect the breadth and impact of our industry. Healthcare is advanced through facilities like Corewell Health’s new care center in Grand Rapids. Education takes center stage with inspiring new environments at Michigan Tech, Detroit Catholic Central, MSU, and Oakland University. Civic and cultural spaces shine as well, including the Redford Township District Library and the Ginsberg Building at the University of Michigan. Urban development projects also stand tall, from the AC Hotel Detroit at the Bonstelle to Studio Park Tower, while forward-looking initiatives like the Ford Engineering Laboratory renovation, JST Test Lab, and the Genesee County ARTP Digester demonstrate innovation in research and infrastructure. Behind every project is a team of dedicated owners, designers, engineers, and contractors who brought vision to reality. We commend them all for their creativity, perseverance, and commitment to excellence.

“Architecture should always be an invitation and a promise.” - Juhani Pallasmaa

More than anywhere else, that philosophy is relevant in healthcare design, where a medical journey often begins with apprehension that may continue into anxiety despite the best efforts of compassionate, talented healthcare providers. The September issue of CAM Magazine delves into some of SmithGroup's recent healthcare projects to explore how “a profound design process eventually makes the patron, the architect, and every occasional visitor in the building a slightly better human being.”
