Happy Birthday Shakespeare! If we were still following the Julian calendar (which Shakespeare lived under) today would be April 23 and therefore Shakespeare's Birthday (presumed).

Today is International Literacy Day! Support Literacy! Read a book.

Do you remember who taught you to read and write?

At least 750 million adults and 264 million out-of-school children still lack basic literacy skills.

Friday's International #LiteracyDay highlights how our increasingly digital world can help close the literacy gap.

April 23rd is World Book Day! Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any organized efforts to observe World Book Day in the US. There seem to be more efforts to observe it in the UK, although in the UK day they also celebrate the first Thursday in March as World Book Day. 2 World Book Days is better than none, but for me every day is World Book Day!

It's National Book Week. The rules are: grab the closest book to you, turn to page 56, and post the 5th sentence as your status. Don't mention the title. Copy the rules as part of your status.

"So thou maist say the Kings lyes by a begger, if a
begger dwell neer him: or the Church stands by thy Ta-
bor, if thy Tabor stand by the Church."

When I saw a post with the rules and grabbed the book nearest to me, it was already open to page 56. Spooky.

Happy Actual 452nd Anniversary of Shakespeare's birth and 400th Anniversary of his death. Since England was on the Julian Calendar in Shakespeare's time and has since switched to the Gregorian Calendar (in 1752) their April 23rd would have been our May 3rd.

04/25/2016

News Flash! Shakespeare 400th Death Anniversary celebrated 10 days too soon!!
Since England still followed the Julian Calendar when Shakespeare died and in modern times we have switched to the Gregorian calendar which was 10 days ahead in 1616, that 400 years (if you count years as approximately 365 1/4 days) the anniversary would actually be May 3rd!

Come, You Spirits! The Supernatural World of Shakespeare: A Guide for Critical Thinking and Creative Activities offers an approach to exploring the supernatural elements in Shakespeare’s plays for individuals, groups, or classes. Starting with an examination of the supernatural elements used by Shakespeare, it goes on to show how the words of Shakespeare can serve as an inspiration for new theatrical works, and includes original plays plus tips on writing your own play.
In Shakespeare’s day there was a much greater belief in ghosts, spirits, fairies, witches, and supernatural creatures who could affect the world. That difference can be hard for us to grasp, so Milt, Warren, and Joanne have provided examples from Shakespeare’s plays, and have given them context. The best way to enjoy and appreciate the world of Shakespeare is to engage in it, and that is what this book offers.

Antibes is lovely town on the French Riviera. In 1950 I had a pleasant, uneventful summer in Antibes and later imagined this story about three Syracuse University graduates in that beautiful environment. A fourth character is an African American singer they met when they heard her perform with the the great jazz saxophonist Sidney Bechet whom I used to see on the beach.
That summer life changed for Clari, the singer; Harvey, a painter; Genvieve, a corres-pondent for Le Monde; and Evelyn who was escaping from her privileged world. We pick up the story twenty years later when the Vietnam War created violent confrontations in the United States. Clari and Evelyn, a successful signing duo in Europe, return home for a New York concert. Is America with its new Civil Rights laws ready for them?
“…the food, drink, sounds and smells of 1950 provide enough romance to keep any imagination afloat, topless, on the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean. – J.Peter Bergman, Berkshire Bright Focus.
“A combination of wonderful characters, evocative settings, and the best and worst of historical times make Antibes 1950 a compelling and engrossing novel. I loved every minute of it.” - Rebecca Rupp, author of After Eli.
