Just when you thought tape was dead. Magnetic and optical mediums are used for data storage both have many of the same capabilities. One advantage to tape is it doesn't get scratched and can be more easily repaired. Optical discs are nice because at least at this time they can hold more information in a smaller cheaper design and last longer when stored properly. In case your wondering a hard drive on board a modern computer is a magnetic medium.

Storing data on magnetic tape is back, baby. Sony has announced that thanks to a partnership with IBM Research in Zurich, the pair have developed a magnetic tape cartridge capable of storing 201 gigabytes of data per square inch for a total of 330 terabytes per cartridge. Yes you can recycle your CD/DVD/Bluray discs here this is almost a hundred pounds (86 Lbs) that I recently brought in to a recycler that recovers all of the materials unlike your county recycler which actually has a large percentage end up in a landfill. Save them up and bring them in to me free first ten pounds which would be about one hundred discs.

One of the most common questions I get at Video Movie Transfer is can I copy this old Hollywood style movie to DVD? It is limited edition or isn't available anymore the movie studio no longer exists or they haven't released it to DVD, I would like a back up to view so this one doesn't get damaged, or I just want the convenience of watching it on my television or computer. The answer for me is I have to discern what is OK and what is not. Generally the answer is no I will not make copies of commercially released productions without prior written consent by the copyright owner. The service I do offer is to help you find the owner of the work and file a request if you so wish. Also I can help you navigate the areas of fair use and public domain as it applies to copyright. There are instances when the copyright is expired and there are provisions in the law that may allow you to make copies in the use of parody, commentary, historical preservation, and education (in limited circumstances) to name a few areas of exception. So this actually means that your VCR tape or laser disc movie collection may be invaluable. If you are looking to sell your old tapes I can help you make the right connections and get you the most value for your collection or at least get you an honest quote.
