JSMS is excited to welcome pianist Ryo Kaneko to our teaching team; Ryo is working on his Doctorate, studying at IU with Emile Naumoff. He focuses on getting his students a solid reading and technique foundation; from there his students may dig into classical music, or other music of their choice. Ryo has been teaching since 2017, and was teaching at Melody Music since August 2023, until their recent closure. For booking, email [email protected]

Bloomington's music scene is reckoning with the loss of our one remaining retail-centered music shop, Melody Music. They've been up against Sweetwater and Amazon, who, uh, don't have to pay rent at the mall in order to operate. A tale as old as the internet... No! A tale as old as Walmart!? Retail must be a hard road.

JSMS is very excited to be bringing a few of their music teachers into our ranks!! Keep an eye out to learn about their offerings in the coming days.

Jefferson St. Music Studio is restocking the Gear Stop; accessories such as Pro-Mark drum sticks, Real feel practice pads, Evans drum heads, D'Addario strings, etc. will be available in the coming days. With nowhere NEAR the selection previously available locally, ha!

Ardent Instruments continues to sell boutique used guitars and amps. They offer expert guitar setups, they work on amps, and they sell guitar accessories... and Dylan Maloney at Ardent continues to craft beautiful, custom, handmade acoustic guitars. Same building as Rainbow Bakery, 4th and Rogers.

I hear good things about the W**d Patch over in Nashville Indiana, they're another instrument retail shop just down the road.

I recall shopping for my first drumset when I was 12, back when Wilbur (who later started Melody) was working at Smith-Holden. He showed me a basic rock beat on some electronic drums, which I could beat on without bothering other customers. He kept an eye out for me over the years and I've always remembered that.

Bloomington lost an amazing band director/jazz educator in late December. As the band director at Bloomington North for 38 years, Janis helped many of our peers/bandmates/students step up their musical game in major ways (we are thinking of many of the horn players in JSPB, the Romy brothers, Lewis Rogers, Julian Bransby, etc). She was known for entering her jazz bands in major international competitions, and coming home with medals. More importantly, she found her students’ strengths and she challenged, pushed and encouraged them, and nurtured a love of jazz among this town’s youth at BHSN. After retiring, she had a hard time staying away from what had become her life’s work. She was helping out at North, and offering guidance to other school bands, right up until a heart attack took her life on 12/23/24. Rest in Peace Janis!

Fowler has been having a great time working on a new full length album for at Echo Park. In October we tracked simultaneous guitar and vocals. This weekend we landed bass (JR McIntire) and drums .cartha.fowler all to 2” 16 track tape.
This unusual mic setup features Oktava ML-16s (ribbons) as overheads. Toms mic’d with Cole’s (also vintage ribbons). Cole’s are placed high enough to not clip from the force of air off the toms, and the cymbals are placed in the null/dead zone of those Figure of 8 ribbon mics, to cancel the cymbal presence. Had to dance around with my cymbals higher than I like, but it’s worth it! [also KSM141 on snare, Shure Beta 91A and Speaker turned sub mic on kick drum, and, Neumann KM184 as mono room mic.
Results are quite warm and bouncy!
