Gemar chatimah tovah!

Sunset today (Oct. 1 this year) marks the beginning of the holiest day on the Jewish calendar: Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. For the following 25 hours until nightfall on Oct. 2, Jewish people around the world fast from food and water and other activities, pray, reflect on their actions, confess their sins and seek forgiveness from those they may have offended.

In Israel, the normally busy highways are mostly quiet and businesses closed as many Jewish people spend this time in the synagogues, renewing their commitment to a life guided by faith and righteousness. Like many early followers of Jesus, the Apostle Paul, Luke and their companions kept the holy day fast when they were on their missionary journeys (Acts 27).

Tomorrow, at nightfall Oct. 2, Yom Kippur 2025 will conclude with a long blast of the shofar – that first marked the Jewish New Year during Rosh Hashanah – and greetings of Gemar chatimah tovah, which means “May you be sealed in the Book of Life.”

We pray the same for you all!
