You may have heard rumblings of a strong "El Nino" pattern upcoming. In simple terms, this means that the Pacific Ocean's surface temperatures near the equator are warmer than usual. The water temperatures matter as they can and do dictate our weather patterns here in the USA.

The chart below shows a potential forecast solution based off the CFS climate model which has been gaining more and more confidence. By the end of this summer into fall, we will likely be dealing with a very strong El Nino.

So what does this mean for us here in Indiana for the upcoming winter season? The easy cop out answer is, we don't know yet. But we can give you some historical based facts. Years of El Nino patterns, particularly winter, trend to be warmer and drier. So perhaps this upcoming winter may trend that direction as well.

There are many other factors at play when forecasting long term stuff like this, so we will need to wait to see them all to gain a better understanding of what the winter ahead of us holds.

Bottom line is this, we're not gonna die from a super mega El Nino, but it could make for some unseasonal weather over the next several months.

Who’s ready for the blood moon / lunar eclipse tonight? Check out the moon around 12:12am ET!

Who else will be out watching the partial lunar eclipse tonight? We expect clear skies across ALL of the Great Lakes region here on Thursday night / early Friday morning!

Full timing info:

Eclipse begins at 9:23pm ET - This is when the moon enters Earth's shadow.

Partial eclipse begins at 10:33pm ET - This is when Earth's shadow starts to spread across the moon. The moon will begin to turn red during this time.

Maximum eclipse occurs at 12:12am ET - This is when 96.2% of the moon will be covered by Earth's shadow. The moon will appear a deep "blood" red color during this time.

Partial eclipse ends at 1:51am ET as the Earth's shadow begins to move. The red color will fade during this time.

Eclipse ends at 3:01am ET

Lastly, keep an eye out for northern lights tonight! There is a chance for aurora across portions of Michigan and Wisconsin!

This is an urgent Flood Update from the Indianapolis Department of Public Works as of 2:45 PM EDT, Saturday, August 15th:

The following 4 areas have been identified as at risk to experience potential flooding with crest of river levels rising sooner than expected. We urge residents within these impact areas to have evacuation plans in place should the need arise.

A Red Cross-staffed shelter is available at the Washington Township Adult Center at 8401 Westfield Blvd. Families with pets should go to the Broad Ripple Park Family Center at 1426 Broad Ripple Ave.

Continue to follow Indy DPW, Marion County Emergency Management, and the City of Indianapolis - Government socials for the most up to date information.

ALERT: The left lane of Interstate 70 westbound near mile marker 154 which is near Reservoir Rd in Wayne County is closed due to flood damage and emergency repairs.

ALERT: The 52nd street bridge in Indianapolis over the canal has now been closed as flood waters have compromised the bridge.

Even though the rain has stopped, the National Weather Service continues to extend Flash Flood Warnings as flooding in so many areas continues (flash flooding, street flooding and river flooding). The Flash Flood Warning for parts of Montgomery and Tippecanoe Counties has been extended until 3:30 PM EDT. This Flash Flood Warning includes Crawfordsville.

Remember to never drive through flooded roadways and turn around, don't drown!

Good Afternoon Hoosiers - Brandon here (the original Brandon from Indiana Weather Online). I'm coming out of retirement this weekend to help the new team at Indiana Weather Online out with the ongoing historic flooding taking place across Central Indiana.

Historic flooding continues to unfold as the White River reaches and exceeds the forecast crests as water continues to flood into Hamilton and Marion County.

We are expecting the river levels to come close to or exceed 1913 flood levels in some areas and look for many roads including Keystone ave near 80th street to eventually be closed as the river overtakes many of the roadways.

The current hardest hit areas stretch from Noblesville to Keystone to Broad Ripple and Rocky Ripple. Water rescues are underway in many areas.

As the flood water moves downtown, we expect the forecasts to catch up to this quickly evolving situation and for extensive flooding to take place from 16th street into the White River State Park areas and eventually areas south of Downtown.

Take all warnings and evacuation notices seriously. We will have updates throughout the day as new information is released and becomes available.
