“Even when I walk through the dark valley of death, I will not be afraid for you are close beside me.” Psalm 23:4 (NLT)

When someone is dying—when they’ve received that terminal diagnosis or are reaching the end of a long life—people around them tend to pull away. They don’t know how to support their loved one in their final days. But when someone is dying, they need people to come close.

In my years as a pastor, I’ve been with many, many people who were dying. I’ve learned how to support them emotionally, physically, and spiritually. They need the people around them to offer COMFORT:

C – Confront your own fears. Many people fear death—so they try to avoid people who are dying. Maybe you’re afraid of what death itself is like. I’ve been there for many deaths, and they’re almost always quite ordinary. People’s bodies slow down, and eventually they just stop; one moment they’re here, and the next they’re not. It’s nothing to fear.

“I am trusting you, O LORD, saying, ‘You are my God!’ My future is in your hands.” Psalm 31:14-15 (NLT)

There are two experiences that absolutely everybody goes through: birth and death. No matter where you live, the mortality rate is the same: 100 percent. Everybody dies. The Bible tells us, “No one can live forever; all will die. No one can escape the power of the grave” (Psalm 89:48 NLT).

When it’s your friend or family member who’s at the end of their life, how can you help them? To offer support, you need to understand what they’re going through.

Everyone reacts differently, but there are some common stages that people typically go through in preparing for death. They’re the five stages of grief. They were first identified by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book On Death and Dying. And you can find similar themes in the book of Psalms.

Fourteen-year-old Jonathan and Jacob of North Broward Preparatory School donate a blanket to a child in need for every one sold, bringing comfort and hope to young patients across South Florida

Boca Raton, FL - August 8, 2025 - Fourteen-year-old twin brothers Jonathan and Jacob, students at North Broward Preparatory School, have launched a nonprofit dedicated to bringing warmth and comfort to children facing illness throughout South Florida. Their organization, Love & Blankets, follows a simple mission: for every super-soft blanket purchased, another is donated to a child in need.

Twin Brothers

Inspired by their mom’s personalized items business, we set out to carry on her work with a special mission. After she returned to her full-time career as an attorney, we took over her blanket business with a heartfelt goal: to sell cozy, fun, and stylish blankets and use 100% of the profits to design and donate blankets to sick children.

Boca Raton, FL - August 8, 2025 - Today, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Blaise Ingoglia announced that more than $44 million in unclaimed property was returned to Floridians during the month of July. Unclaimed property is a financial asset that is unknown, lost, left inactive, unclaimed, or abandoned by its owner. The most common types of unclaimed property are dormant bank accounts, unclaimed insurance proceeds, stocks, dividends, uncashed checks, deposits, credit balances, and refunds.

CFO Blaise Ingoglia said, “My office is working to reunite Floridians with what’s rightfully theirs, returning millions of dollars in unclaimed property back into the hands of hardworking taxpayers, families, and small businesses across the state, just like former CFO Jimmy Patronis worked so hard to do during his tenure.
