“Tribute to The Burrow, a long lost friend. When I arrived at FAU eighteen years ago there was a restaurant/grill on campus with a stage and a couple of pool tables. That location was the only one on campus where students could meet after hours to relax, talk and make friends while listening to music. It was open until midnight and offered live music entertainment, dj’s, spoken poetry and fellowship. Student groups would host events and competitions. For those over 21, the place would serve beer.
The location changed names three times. Originally it was called Wackadoo’s, changing names to Coyote Jack’s for a few years and then a massive overhaul to become The Burrow. The burgers and sandwiches were great! better than the local fare on campus.
For us Hoot/Wisdom Recordings, this place was everything. We hosted many open mic nights, concerts and competitions. Organized by students, for students, The Burrow was the only place in Boca Raton where college student nightlife was welcome. Karaoke, dance nights, live bands, poetry slams and competitions. For a university that has been actively transforming itself from the image of a local commuter school to a residential student hub in the heart of South Florida, it would only make sense that an expansion of The Burrow was the next logical step.
Sadly however, The Burrow silently closed sometime between 2020 and 2022 as the COVID pandemic was underway. The entire place was demolished to make way for an E-sports arena, a gaming center that encourages online rather than in person interaction.
As faculty advisor to Hoot/Wisdom Recordings for the past 18 years, I have mourned the loss of this magnificent space. We continue to do events on campus, but none of the locations compare to what The Burrow offered to us.
We are actively looking for solutions and engaging in conversations with different student organizations to bring back The Burrow.
Rather than complain about it, let’s show the university that we want The Burrow back…”
