Several years ago David Via and Corn Tornado appeared at our Opry in Shelby, NC. NOW I'm seeing this new face and a great talent MASON VIA appear on the scene. Congratulations to MASON on his new career!!!

Mason Via is certainly on a roll this year, appearing as a contestant on American Idol and being chosen as a member of Old Crow Medicine Show.

🎉 TOM T. HALL | HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎉

Please join with us in extending massive happy 85th best wishes to the great Thomas ‘Tom T.’ Hall, balladeer extraordinaire, Opry member and a Bluegrass Hall of Famer (inducted along with his wife, the late Miss. Dixie, in 2018) whose work was inspired and informed by the bluegrass music of his youth and whose storytelling lyrics helped change forever the language of both country music and our beloved bluegrass, born on this day, May 25, 1936 in Olive Hill, KY.

💬 “A once-busy railroad town incorporated in 1884, Olive Hill’s musical claim to fame is as the birthplace of country singer/songwriter icon Tom T. Hall (May 25, 1936 – present). A prominent spokesman for and supporter of bluegrass who in later decades -- and in collaboration with his wife, Miss Dixie -- focused on bluegrass music by advancing the careers of fledgling and established musicians and creating bluegrass music themselves, Hall’s storytelling lyrics helped change the language of country and bluegrass music, expanding narrative and imagistic possibilities. ‘The Storyteller’, as he is known, ‘used his God-given talents to become famed as one of America’s balladeers, telling in music form the story of the common folk and the daily happenings which color their lives,’ so says a plinth dedicated to the town’s most famous son situated adjacent to Olive Hill’s long and fetching Historical Mural.”

BLUEGRASS MUSIC “LiveAtLeatherwoods”

Since 1995, Leatherwoods has been involved in hosting and sharing bluegrass and other music with Cleveland County and the surrounding area. For about 12 years, Leatherwoods hosted local and regional bands and musicians on the stage of the Olde Tyme Courtsquare Opry inside Leatherwood Trading Company. It was a sight to behold and a fun event most every Saturday night during that time. We even produced several CDs for some bands.

In addition, we began broadcasting recorded performances on local radio stations: Classic

Classic Country 1390 WADA AM and Gardner-Webb University Radio WGWG 88.3 FM on a weekly basis. Eventually, 1390 AM went off the air, as did 88.3 FM but WGWG remained alive on the internet at wgwg.org and we are currently producing PodCasts of bands appearing at the OPRY from 1995 and later for our listeners to enjoy. We refer to that group of PodCasts as “LiveAtLeatherwood Classics” and you can find them on the WGWG Radio web site at wgwg.org.

Thanks to all the folks who frequented the OPRY in Shelby and enjoyed the bands and music with us over the years. It was truly a fun time and was enjoyed by all. Thanks for listening in NOW to “Pickin on the Porch 2020” on Monday nights at 8PM and the “Olde Tyme Gospel Radio Hour” with Leatherwoods on Sunday mornings at 11AM.
