🏴‍☠️ There is buried treasure in Idaho. Seriously. And yes, there is even a red X.

On this episode of The Great Idaho Show: The Heart and Mind of Idaho, I sit down with David Foster of 43rd State of Mind.

David has taken his love for Idaho and turned it into something pretty remarkable. He hides actual treasure chests around the state containing gold, silver, Idaho star garnets, cash and more.

Then he gives you 43 clues.

The clues take you through Idaho history, geography, landmarks and riddles until eventually you have to put the computer down, lace up your boots and go looking.

But this conversation quickly became about something bigger than what is inside the box.

It is about getting families outside. Learning Idaho history. Exploring a road you've never turned down. Visiting a community you've never seen. Getting kids off a screen and in front of a map.

And maybe discovering a few treasures along the way that have nothing to do with gold or silver.

At the time we recorded this conversation, four treasures were still out there waiting to be found.

This was a fun one.

NEW EPISODE | HARVEST HEROES AT SPAULDING RANCH

Something special is growing on the West Bench of Boise.

On this episode of The Great Idaho Show, we sit down with Ariel Agenbroad of University of Idaho Extension and Harvest Heroes Veteran Coordinator Connie Mae to talk about Harvest Heroes, a program bringing veterans and their families together through farming, gardening, education and community.

And what a place to do it.

Harvest Heroes is putting crops in the ground at Boise's historic Spaulding Ranch while giving veterans opportunities to learn everything from growing and harvesting to seed saving, food preservation and, coming soon, beekeeping.

We also talk about accessible gardening, donating produce back into the community, unusual crops, irrigation, equipment and the never-ending Idaho battle against weeds and goat heads.

But there is another reason to check this place out.

The West Bench Farmers Market is happening Thursday evenings at Spaulding Ranch. Come see the property, support local growers and food producers, and meet some of the people behind Harvest Heroes.

Veterans. Agriculture. Local food. Idaho history. Community.

That's a pretty good combination.
