Red Flags in Prison Mail
Here’s what to watch out for:

đźš© They ask for money in the first message.
🚩 They say “I love you” before learning your last name.
đźš© They try to guilt-trip you for not replying fast enough.
🚩 They won’t answer anything personal, ever.
đźš© Everything feels too perfect, too fast.

And the biggest red flag? You feel drained after every exchange.

Writing someone inside can be beautiful. But don’t let loneliness blind you to bu****it.

Penpal Etiquette 101: What Not to Say

“So what did you do?”
➤ If they want to tell you, they will. Otherwise, lead with curiosity - not court docs.

“Prison must be crazy.”
➤ No one needs your Netflix summary. Talk like you would to anyone.

“I could never do that.”
➤ This isn’t about you. Keep the performative empathy out of it.

“Are you single?” (on message #1)
➤ Don’t open with a pitch. Build trust first.

Want to connect? Do it with care. They’re not here to entertain you, they're here to be human with you.

How to Write an Inmate (Without Overthinking It)

- Keep it simple. You don’t need a life story in the first message. A short intro, where you're from, and why you're writing is more than enough.

- Be real. You don’t need to impress anyone. Just be yourself.

- Use their preferred method: JPay, GTL, CorrLinks, Securus, or mail. The contact info is on their post.

- Ask a question or two. Make it easy for them to reply.

- Don’t open with trauma-dumping or flirting. This isn’t a game.

That’s it. A few lines. Sent with intention. You’re good.

This didn’t start as a project for me. It started with one letter. A connection.

This is a reminder that people inside still crave something real - conversation, understanding, and the chance to be known for more than their past.

Real Prison Penpals is a platform for inmates to be seen and heard. They submit their own videos. We post them with contact info - nothing fake, nothing flashy.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to actually write someone inside, this is your chance.

Submissions are open. Link in bio.
