A crowd gathers to watch and videotape from the fountain at 5th Ave. and Market St., as a slate and copper clad 40-foot high section of a steeple is raised into place on First Baptist Church early Thursday morning. Three more 20-foot sections will be added to complete the steeple, which was topple by Hurricane Fran in 1996. Then 1997 and now.

Operation Bumblebee Observation Tower #6 aka Ocean City Pier, Topsail Island, NC.

From 1946 to 1948, Topsail Island was the home of the US Navy's Operation Bumblebee, a secret military project to develop a supersonic guided missile. This is observation tower #6. In the 1950s, the tower was incorporated into the Ocean City Pier, which was mostly destroyed during Hurricane Fran in 1996, then 1959 and now.
