As dirt bikers, stock pegs usually get the job done. Most riders do not think about upgrading unless their pegs are worn out or they need to adjust rider position.
On the mountain bike side, it is a different story. Stock plastic pedals, especially on entry level bikes, often lack grip and durability. If you are using a MTB as a cross training tool, or just for fun, upgrading your pedals can make a noticeable difference in control and fun.
I’ve been running Composite Pedals for a long time. They are fully serviceable with replaceable pins and offer great grip at a reasonable price. However, in rocky terrain, composite pedals can take more abuse. I have seen riders lose pins after impacts with rocks or logs, which can reduce performance over time.
For more demanding conditions, a metal pedal may be the better choice. For most riders though, a quality composite pedal is a necessary step up from stock.
