FIRST BLACK CITY IN MISSOURI

Kinloch, Mo - Kinloch is the oldest African-American community to be incorporated in the state of Missouri. The City was home to a vibrant and flourishing black community for much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Kinloch is the hometown of California Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Actress/Singer Jenifer Lewis and Actor/Writer John Cothran, Jr.

People often wonder how the all-black community in northwest St. Louis County came to have the name, Kinloch. The name is Scottish in origin and means “at the head of the lake.” Some sources indicate that Major Henry Smith Turner named the area after his ancestral family name. Other sources state that the Scots settler, Major Richard Graham, who arrived in the area in 1807, named part of his land “Kinloch” after his holdings in Virginia. The area remained sparsely settled up to the end of the 19th century. A small number of blacks had land in the locality.

Kinloch Park was developed in the 1890s as a commuter suburb. The establishment of the Wabash Railroad from downtown St. Louis through the Kinloch area sparked development by whites. A small area of land was reserved for purchase by blacks, many of whom where house servants for Kinloch’s new homeowners. When a white land-owner sold to a black family a small parcel in an area of Kinloch restricted to whites, many whites sold their lots and moved, thus further opening the market to blacks.

The majority of blacks arrived in Kinloch during the 1920s. Many of them were black soldiers returning from service in World War I. Restrictive housing practices in St. Louis City made moving outside the city and away from the pressures of racial prejudice appealing to many blacks. The East St. Louis race riots in 1917 brought many Illinois residents to the area. Additional black settlement was abetted by the northern migration of blacks from the South.

The first church in Kinloch was the First Missionary Baptist Church of Kinloch Inc., now in Black Jack, MO. established in 1901. Other churches followed: First United Methodist Church in 1904; Second Missionary Baptist Church at 5508 Lyons in 1914; Kinloch Church of God in Christ, now Tabernacle of Faith and Deliverance, in 1914; and Our Lady of the Angels (originally Holy Angels) in the early 1920s.

Although the one-room frame Vernon School opened for black children in 1885, it closed a few months later. Black children in the Kinloch area traveled to Normandy to attend the school opened at Lucas and Hunt [electronic editor’s note: “Lucas and Hunt” is the name of a single street.] in 1886. The Vernon School, which moved to a number of locations in the area, served black children until the formation of the Kinloch School District in 1902, and its building remained in use as an all-black school in the Ferguson District until it was closed in 1967. When whites in the area split to form a separate school district in 1902, the Scudder Avenue School became Kinloch’s elementary school. A second elementary school, Dunbar, was opened in 1914. High school students attended Sumner in St. Louis City until Kinloch High School opened in 1937. In the mid-1970s, to further integrate education, both the Kinloch and the white Berkeley school districts were annexed into the Ferguson-Florissant School District. Kinloch students were also served by Holy Angels (now Our Lady of the Angels) Elementary School which opened in 1931.

On August 20, 1948 Kinloch was incorporated as Missouri’s first fourth-class, all-black city.

In the 1980’s, the City of St. Louis began to buy out property in Kinloch as part of the expansion of Lambert-Saint Louis International Airport, dramatically reducing Kinloch’s size. Eventually the airport took the vast majority of private homes in Kinloch. Between 1990 and 2000, Kinloch lost more than 75 percent of its population. The social and economic effects of this buyout were disastrous for the community and contributed more than anything else to its population decline.

In recent years, there have been valiant efforts to rebuild the city. The City of St. Louis, St. Louis County, Kinloch, Berkeley and Ferguson reached an agreement on a redevelopment plan for 600 acres of land on the northeast corner of I-70 and I-170, along the eastern edge of the airport. Years ago, this land was part of the airport buyout. The redevelopment will offer office, retail, and industrial space and is expected to create about 12,000 jobs, along with tax revenue to be split among the municipalities. The developers, NorthPark Partners, intend to make improvements in Kinloch and donate a new civic center to Kinloch.

Kinloch had a recorded population of 298 at the 2010 census bureau with a median age of 34.4 years.

CLOSED NO STAFF

ST.LOUIS MO, - This Family Dollar has closed early due to staffing shortage. Family Dollar is at the bottom at the list when is comes to staff shortages. All across America there's a staffing shortage that companies can't seem to solve. The worst part about it is its infecting the people due to early closing, long lines, empty shelves and even permanent closures .

There are more than 35,400+ job opening in just the St.louis area alone. About 35% of those openings are first responder and health care worker position. The rest of the population is fast food, retail and warehouse positions. Missouri minimum wage is $11.15 and companies even offer more the that with great benefits.

SCHNUCKS FOOD OUTAGE?

ST.LOUIS MO, - The Schnucks on Bellefontaine/Sierra @ the Vista plaza has had an food outage and customers concerningly asking questions and not being heard. Apparently "its nothing new" a local shopper said on viral post about the outage. One local shopper said "she can't even get a couple of ingredients to make a simple meal". Shelves are empty while customers are wondering.

Schnucks told us "there was a lettuce recall due to e-coli and listeria, and they threw it out and cleaned shelving"

Saint Louis Global Did research and the lettuce seemed to left: 53 sick, 30 hospitalized, 4 with kidney failure and 3 dead nation-wide.

Some say its more to a grocery store than lettuce and that shouldn't make them clear out the whole store. So we asked a Schnucks employee "where the food" and the did comment at all but instead got a manager for us. The manager said "customers go nuts when buying grocery's".

Suns All-Star Devin Booker working way back from hamstring injury with help from LightStim

LOS ANGELES — Devin Booker has many reasons to smile right now even though he'll miss his fifth consecutive game Monday night.

One, his injured left hamstring is improving.

Two, he's at least back on the court with his teammates for shootarounds.

Three, his team is still rolling without him.

With the NBA's best record, the Suns (21-4) were 3-1 without Booker going into Monday's game against the Clippers (15-12) at STAPLES Center as he continues to rehab and train in working his way back from injury.

"Hammy feels good, man," said Booker, who strained his hamstring in the first half of a Nov. 30 win over the Golden State Warriors. "Just getting back right. Finally back out on the court doing some things. I've just been lifting prior to that. Feeling good back out on the court during shootaround. That's always a plus."

Booker believes he needs some "contact" in practice before returning to game action. Suns coach Monty Williams likes for players to get 5-on-5 action before putting them back on the floor.

However, the Suns have a pretty packed schedule the rest of this month that will cut down on practice time.

Monday: at Clippers.

Tuesday: at Blazers;

Thursday: vs. Wizards

Sunday: vs. Hornets.

The Charlotte game begins a stretch in which Phoenix plays every other day (11 games) from then until Jan. 8, but the two days between the Thursday and Sunday games looks like an ideal opportunity for Booker to get that "contact" for the final green light to play.

"I think once we get back to Phoenix and be able to get on the court and get some up and down and just check all the boxes," said Booker, who battled hamstring injuries in the 2018-19 season and last season. "I've just been in shootaround and stationary shooting for the most part."

OSHA investigating deadly collapse at Illinois Amazon facility hit by tornado

EDWARDSVILLE, Mo - It’s often a matter of time after a disaster or other criss when an investigation is launched to find out what happened, how, why and the lessons to be learned from it.

On Monday, OSHA started its own probe into Friday’s deadly collapse of the Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville, Illinois that was destroyed by one of the 60 tornadoes that hit nine states Friday and Saturday.

OSHA inspectors have been at the site destroyed Amazon fulfillment center since Saturday, according to the Washington Post.

CNBC reported that, “OSHA has six months to complete its probe, issue citations and propose monetary penalties if violations of workplace safety and/or health regulations 0are found, OSHA spokesperson Scott Allen told CNBC in a statement. The agency has had compliance officers at the warehouse since Saturday to provide assistance, Allen said.

In a statement, Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel noted that, “OSHA investigates all workplace fatalities and we are supporting them.”

In the corporate world, an often overlooked part of dealing with a disaster, scandal or other emergency is the importance of deciding who will investigate the cause of the crisis. A lot will be riding on the answer in terms of the credibility, perception, and the results of the inquiry and the steps that are taken to ensure the crisis is not repeated.

Workers killed in Amazon warehouse collapse range in ages from 26 to 62

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Grief comes in waves for the family and friends of Amazon workers killed in the Edwardsville tornado, as they come to grips that their loved ones are truly gone.

Forty-five Amazon workers were able to get out of the warehouse safely, with one airlifted to a hospital for treatment. Six people were killed when the Amazon facility collapsed.

The victims were identified as 28-year-old Deandre S. Morrow of St. Louis; 62-year-old Kevin D. Dickey of Carlyle, Illinois; 29-year-old Clayton Lynn Cope of Alton, Illinois; 34-year-old Etheria S. Hebb of St. Louis; 46-year-old Larry E. Virden of Collinsville, Illinois; and 26-year-old Austin J. McEwen of Edwardsville.

The family of Etheria Hebb says she was a mother of a 1-year-old little boy, the youngest of her siblings, and a hard worker who loved her family dearly.

Her cousin says she was named after her.

“A part of me is missing. We called each other ‘Little Etheria’ and ‘Big Etheria.’ It won’t be the same without her,” Etheria Hudson said.

Hebb had just transferred to Amazon’s Edwardsville location about six months ago from the Hazelwood facility.

“She was an outgoing person. She was just sweet as can be. Just a tragic thing to lose her like this. It’s really heartbreaking. I know it can happen to anyone, but to someone so sweet and full of life,” Hudson said.

The family waited on pin and needles Friday night when the storm produced a deadly tornado that ripped through the Amazon facility, only to get word Etheria did not survive.

“We were told they were running and they had like 10 minutes to get to a safe location. They said the ceiling collapsed on her,” Hudson said.

Meanwhile, the family of Kevin Dickey released the following statement:

‘’We are devasted at the toll this natural disaster has taken on our community and the entire Midwest. Our hearts are with the other families who have also lost loved ones.

We want to thank first responders for their efforts as well as the other heroes who were on the scene to help others get to safety. Dad talked often about his co-workers and their daily stories; he had a great bond with many.

Dad was a kind man that loved spending time with his family. He stole the show and hearts of his grandchildren anytime he was around. He will be truly missed. We have lost a very special person.’’
