Our Story

90.5 WASU-FM The App! is Appalachian State University’s student-operated radio station! We’ve been on the air for 45 years, having had our first broadcast in 1972! Currently, we have 13 staff members and 4 interns who work in programming, production, underwriting/accounts, promotions, news, sports, and interactive media! We also have more than 50 student DJs who volunteer with us! We’re under the leadership of Dan Vallie, who created the Kellar Radio Talent Institute!

WASU follows an alternative format, but features several specialty shows each semester including Top 40s, Hip-Hop and throwback music!

Our students’s dedication and talent has paid off in many awards and nominations: 2012 - mtvU Woodie award for College Station of the Year 2011 - the first mtvU “Shoulda Coulda Woodie” Award. 2008 - WASU was a finalist in the New York Festivals Radio Broadcasting Awards. We broadcast 24/7, 365 days a year on 90.5 to the High Country and worldwide on www.wasuradio.com and iheart.com
