So.

I'm filled with so many sports stories over the years that I've decided to share some of them on this page.

The first one goes back to 2016 and a softball game at Lamar.

Setting the scene: at that time you could pull up to the outfield fence at the Lamar ball park and watch the game.

Hannah McClung was the Booneville batter and she absolutely socked one over the center field fence...and smack into someone's windshield, breaking it.

The person decided to move their vehicle and parked it along the left field line.

Later in the game, Hannah was back up and ripped a line drive foul over the side fence...and the ball hit the same vehicle, this time on a tire.

Magnetism, I guess.

I've had a few more thoughts since I published this on my personal page.

Some put down the term "utility player" in softball as someone not quite good enough to be steady at one position.

When, in fact, it is exactly the opposite. It is someone who plays EVERY position at a very high level.

You might say, a Swiss army knife. Which is what one of the scouting combines has called her.

Only two fielding errors this season while playing three different positions, best on the team.

Not just that. Torie is a vocal leader, which every good team needs, regardless of sport.

Can't wait to see what the future brings.

So without any further ado:

"The One About The Girl On Fire": Torie Nobles

I have a relatively late starting point for this one, the fall of 2023. Junior high volleyball.

With Lilly Downs already setting things ablaze as the libero on the senior high level, one wondered who the junior high would come up with.

It turned out to be another redhead, and it didn't take long before she was in command of that back row.

Saves? Already many to speak of.

Then basketball. She started it on the bench but before long was in the starting lineup. Not much scoring yet, but already finding her way with assists, finishing second on the team.

After a season of travel softball, it was back to the volleyball floor. Once again she showed out. More saves and better ones. If you showed her saves and digs side by side with Lilly's, there wasn't much of a difference.

In the end she dug 74%, served a few aces and got some kills as well. Now, 74% is very good at any level.

And back to basketball where this time she had command of the team from the start. She still had the assists going on but was now scoring more, and discouraged opponents with tough defense.

She finished second in scoring and assists, led in steals and was, incredibly, third in rebounds. And blocked 8 shots, too.

We all know that that improvement was due to hard work. In all aspects.

Now it was softball season. And as a ninth grader, she could play senior high ball, and was immediately in the starting lineup.

She pitched. Then we had a need in right field. She answered the call. Did she ever.

A couple of spectacular catches, and handled the routine things well. You get the picture.

And hitting? Especially in the second half of the season, she delivered clutch hits, sacrifice bunts, moved runners over. And eventually started picking up RBIs herself after moving to the six hole.

In the last half of the season there was nobody better batting and nobody better in the field than Red. In the last 11 games she hit .500. And she only had 2 errors and struck out just 5 times.

Absolutely on fire those last few weeks.

And as it turned out, those were her last weeks as a LadyCat. For next year she is moving on to Johnson County Westside. Hey, who wouldn't jump at a chance to play for a team her step-dad coaches?

That team was on the rise this past season and
they are going to be so much better now. And not just because she's going there.

It's a little like what happened in 2017 with Jadyn Hart, but the difference is that we got to see what she could do on the field for us at least for one season.

And it was brilliant.

She'll certainly be missed here, but Rebel fans, you're in for a treat.

Thanks, Torie. Continue to be brilliant and see where it takes you.

"The One Who Turned Into A Multi Sport Athlete" : Noah Harrel

I first remembered him as I think a 4th or 5th grader on the football field, running away from players on the other team almost at will.

Like others in this series, another sport became dominant for him, in this case basketball.

He had a great three years and finished in the top 5 in scoring, having made more three-pointers than anyone in Bearcat history.

This past year, he also came out for football but used his basketball skills to advantage, "posting up" smaller D-backs and just out jumping them for the completion.

A very good outfielder, but will be remembered this year in baseball for The Save.

We were fresh out of pitchers who had pitch count available in the regional 3rd place game so turned to him for the last 2 outs. And he got them, the last by strikeout.

And now he strikes out for adulthood and with the skill set he has learned, Noah will do great.

"The One Whose Name Got Butchered, But He Took It And Ran": Jace Washburn

You just knew he was going to be a very good athlete.

Early on he had outstanding potential but
at some point, some PA announcer messed up his last name.

He and his family took that gaffe, used it as a nickname, and the rest is Bearcat history.

He led the Cats to the 2023 state championship, and they went deep in the playoffs the other two years.

In basketball, he played the complete game; while he was a prolific scorer, nothing satisfied him more than taking a charge. When he did that it seemed to fire up the entire team. Three times he took 4 charges in one game.

And an outstanding pitcher, shortstop, and batter in baseball. It was his baseball smarts that started that double pickoff at state.

To top it off, you couldn't meet a more outstanding or humble young man. Yes sir, no sir, all the qualities one needs, they are all there.

The future is unlimited.

Here's to you, Jace Washington.

"The One Who Found Her Confidence": Angie Brown

Another one from the 7th graders of 2019. This one played basketball.

And while the athletic ability showed early, she had a lot to learn.

But she had great athletes to watch and learn from. First Heaven Sanchez, then Lexi Franklin.

And her junior year was when she broke out. The passes to teammates became easier. Her teammates were scoring. By the end of the season she had 81 assists.

Then this year. Her passes had acquired pinpoint accuracy. Especially the long ones. Tempi, Haylee and Baylee were the main recipients.

The Atkins game was her peak. The passes were perfect. Tempi was scoring at will. Others too. When it was finished she had 14 assists and a major school record was hers.

But she could score if she had to. She was shifty when she got under the basket and got more than her share of and-1's.

When the season finished she had 144 assists, by far a school record. May stand for a while, too. And 3rd for a career.

She also ran track and played golf and tennis (thanks Coach Holub) during her time but basketball was her sport.

A very bright girl she was too. An honor graduate.

All it took was confidence. And you couldn't find a more confident girl now. She is going to rock whatever she does.

"The One Who Is The Coolest Customer": Lilly Downs

2019 now. The seventh grade volleyball team was full of athleticism. Roni and Farrah were on that team, among others.

But there was one who stood out because of the cool approach she took to the game. Even then.

Almost every serve over the net. And for a 7th grader, already very good defensively.

Time, games and practice only made her more confident. And three years later she was ready for the big time.

I'll say. As a sophomore she broke a record I thought was going to be difficult to beat, and made it look easy.

By her junior year, I had begun to broadcast volleyball. It seemed nothing bothered her. Even if she missed, she bounced right back and got the next four or five in a row. And many were spectacular.

And that's when I came up with my description:

"The Coolest Customer On Any Volleyball Court Anywhere In The World".

And as long as I broadcast volleyball, I will stand by that statement. Every match I called, she would pull something else out of her bag of tricks.

The peak came at Dover last season. I couldn't make it, so I watched on Hudl. And she was never better.

The stat sheet showed it. 73 digs. Absolutely blowing away the previous record. And when it was over, she had also obliterated the previous career record, which I thought would stand for far more than 8 years.

And she also did it while working. If you picked up an order at Walmart over the past couple of years, there's a decent chance she shopped for you.

You couldn't miss her on the court. Just look for the shock of red hair.

With the determination she showed these last six years, there is no doubt that whatever she decides to do, she will do it with the calm tenacity that has carried her this far. And that will carry her to success.

She is one of one.

"The One With Boundless Energy": Farrah Stringer

I first remembered her in 5th or 6th grade. An incredible amount of energy in whatever she did.

She first showed it in softball, then volleyball. And all the while, being so active in many different things.

Cheer. Show choir. Drama. And she did each thing with gusto.

After watching her in The Wizard of Oz, if we could go back to 1939, Dorothy might well have been a blonde.

And what a big personality. Just like her sister.

When she would get a kill from the back row. Or have a perfect assist. Or smack a key base hit. Or when one of her teammates hit a home run. Exuberance of the highest order.

She was the biggest cheerleader when on the bench, and even coached a JO volleyball team.

I can remember when, in practice, she tied into one and over the wall it went. What a happy girl.

And a loving one too. The picture at Senior Day with her nephew tells volumes.

When you get down to it, there's just nobody quite like her.

"The One That Is Smelling The Flowers"

That, of course, would be Peyton Bonner.

She was 3 when I took the picture you saw earlier.

At Van Buren, she grew as a student and a person.

She played basketball, ran track, and was a cheerleader.

P decided to give up the sports after her sophomore year and concentrate on the academic side of things.

And it has paid off. Last night she graduated with high honors.

P-Dawg may be small in stature, but don't let that fool you. She is a giant when it comes to tenaciousness.

And now it's off to the next chapter and it will be a marvelous one.

Last night when I gave her her gift, she asked me, "Do you want me to open it in front of you?"

I thought about it for a second and then said "Open it anytime you want. You're calling the shots now."

Her shots will be true, that's for sure.

I am proud of you, Peyton. Love you. ❤️

"The One Who Loved To Play Tag": Ellie Smith

It was the summer of 2017 and I was at the ballpark.

There was this kid after the game looking to play tag. To humor her I took the challenge.

I was "It" 99% of the time. The few times I did tag her, I was back to "It" in less than a minute.

Few people on the softball diamond ever caught her.

And as for playing tag?

She tagged the volleyball for a kill nearly 600 times.

She tagged first base for an out on defense or caught a pop up 440 times, including one that won the state championship.

She tagged the softball for a hit 126 times. 50 times this season alone.

After she got a hit, she tagged the next base via a steal 44 times, second in school history.

She tagged home plate for a run 119 times. Including a school record 45 times this season.

Yes, that girl loved playing tag.

Confession: Until I saw the graduation program, I always thought one or both of her names were short for something else.

But no.

It's really just Ellie Maggie.

There's only one Ellie Maggie. And she's one of the greats. Both in sports and in life.

On my regular page, I made a series called "The One", about some graduating seniors and a couple of others who have compelling stories.

On the first one I didn't assign a The One moniker, so I'll do it now.

"The One On Her Sister's Shoulders"

The first one was I think in 3rd grade. It was 2016, I was at volleyball practice and her sister was on the team.

She climbs up on her sister's shoulders while sister is on the court.

However, volleyball did not end up being her sport. It was softball where she made her mark.

Her natural position was shortstop, but for three years she was the personal catcher for one of the best pitchers in state history. She could pitch herself, too, if needed.

Back at shortstop, all the way to the final game, she made some incredible plays. I frankly don't know how she got that one out yesterday. She was all the way behind 3rd base when making the throw.

She owns five school records and a place as one of the greats.

Well deserving of her number, 1.
