There is a chance of a T-storm this afternoon but otherwise we should be in good shape (ignoring the fog).

Scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms will be expected across the region later today as a slow moving cold front moves into the area. Any stronger storms will produce high rates of 2"+/hr or higher, which could lead to very localized flash flooding as a few spots may see up to 2-4 inches of rain. Flash flooding may occur in as little as minutes in the heaviest thunderstorms.

THE WEEK AHEAD (07/13/25):

We have had showers most days this week, along with a lot of fog around the harbor and Southport. Yesterday there was a very localized torrential downpour in Boothbay. It didn’t last long, just a few minutes, but dumping rain at a rate of 1.37 inches per hour it added over 1/8 inch to the rain total. The coming week should see fewer showery days but the weather for late next Sunday and Monday bears watching.

Cooler than normal temperatures have persisted since Wednesday and are likely to continue until we see summer-like temperatures return on Tuesday. Mid 70s to low 80s are likely on Wednesday through the coming weekend. Tuesday through Friday are expected to be quite humid as well as seasonably warm.

A shower or two and a thunderstorm is possible tomorrow. At this point Friday looks like it will be rainy in the afternoon and Late Sunday into Monday could also see some rain. The Sunday/Monday period could see some significant rainfall if the current ECMWF forecast holds.

Winds are expected to be quite light at 5-10 mph with gusts under 20 mph at least through Saturday.

There are no advisories, watches or warnings out currently for our coastal waters. Other than the fog persisting, a chance of showers and a possible thunderstorm tomorrow, conditions are looking good through Thursday. Light winds are expected through Wednesday with winds still only around 10 kt Thursday. Seas should be 2 feet or less through Thursday.

The tropical Atlantic is without any storms or Tropical Depressions, but there is an area in the Gulf of America where there is a relatively low probability of something developing within the next 7 days.

The weather has not been behaving quite the way it was expected to for the last couple of days. I've been busy and haven't had a chance to "keep up" with the changes. We'll give it another go tomorrow and see if we can't get the expectations for at least the first have of the coming week better.

I was in Salem, NH around noon today where it was sunny, 83° and uncomfortably humid. I didn't see any sun on the way down until I got into Massachusetts and onto I495.

THE MIDWEEK UPDATE (07/09/25):

We had a few showers yesterday afternoon and last night in the southern portions of the peninsula at least, but total accumulation was well under a tenth of an inch. Humidity is high enough for patchy fog, or very heavy haze, this morning. We probably won’t see much, if any, sun today and there is a chance of a shower with a cloudy and humid day in store.

Cooler temperatures have arrived and tomorrow should be the coolest day for the coming month and more most likely. The daytime high tomorrow is unlikely to get out of the 60s for most of the peninsula, but we should be back up into the 70s for the rest of the week and weekend. Overnight lows in the mid 60s for Friday night and the weekend after a couple of nights in the low 60s.

A shower is possible this morning and rain/showers are expected for tomorrow. Total accumulation for tomorrow could be anywhere from under a tenth inch to between ¼ and ½ inch. Next most likely period of rain is Sunday night or Monday.

Winds are expected to be quite light at 5-10 mph for the next 10 days with gusts under 20 mph.

There are no advisories, watches or warnings out for our coastal waters. Other than the potential for thunderstorms popping up, conditions look good through the weekend. Tomorrow is expected to be the “windiest” day with winds of 10 kt forecast, otherwise “light wind” is forecast. Seas should be 2 feet or less through Friday and 1 foot for the weekend.

The tropical Atlantic is without any potential storms once again.

Looks like a bit of morning fog and then rain/showers for most of the rest of tomorrow. Thunderstorms possible from midday on.

Checked on "Chantal" or what is left of it, which is expected to move out to sea south of Cape Cod. It isn't expected to intensify to anything serious.

THE WEEK AHEAD (07/06/25):

We had a bit of rain Thursday, but there hasn’t been much of anything to complain about during the weekend. Data from the Boothbay weather station was off-line for a time as we transitioned to Fidium for real high speed internet access. We are back on line now and boy what a difference!

Daytime highs in the upper 70s to low 80s are expected for the next 2 days with cooler weather beginning Wednesday when highs in the upper 60s until the weekend when temperatures increase a bit with low 70s expected for the weekend. Tonight will be a warm one with an overnight in the lower 70s in some areas at least. Overnight lows otherwise are expected to run in the 60s through the week. Tuesday looks like it will be uncomfortably humid with a dew point in the mid 70s, at least until a front arrives to bring cooler and drier air for Wednesday.

A thunderstorm is possible any time from tomorrow night through early Wednesday morning. Although it doesn’t look like we will have any significant rain during the second half of the week, we could get a shower just about any day through the weekend. The next significant rain is likely to arrive early next week.

No exceptionally windy days are expected over the next week with tomorrow likely the windiest day with winds around 15 mph and gusts to around 30 mph. Otherwise winds are expected to be light (under 10 mph) with gusts under 20 mph well into next week.

There is a SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY in effect through 6AM tomorrow morning due to winds 10-20 kt, gusts to 25 kt and seas 3-6 feet. It looks like smoother sailing beginning midweek with light winds expected Wednesday and Thursday with seas subsiding to 2 feet Wednesday. There is the potential for thunderstorms Tuesday.

“Chantal” was short lived as a Tropical Storm as it is over land in the Carolinas and has been downgraded to a Tropical Depression. It is expected to move offshore again and move northeastward, moving out to sea to our south.

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY

07/05/2025

I'm not sure when I will get the "Week Ahead" post out tomorrow or if data from the Boothbay weather station will be disrupted for some period. We're transitioning to fiber optic internet access from DSL sometime during the period of 10AM to 3PM. Worst case I expect I will get the post out by suppertime.

In the meantime, our next period of rain is most likely Tuesday. Temps around 80° though Monday but still mid to upper 70s Tuesday and Wednesday. Still no significant winds during the next week or more.

"Chantal" is the third named storm of this hurricane season having developed into a tropical storm. Chantal is not expected to intensify into a hurricane but remain a tropical storm for a while. The current ensemble of potential tracks doesn't indicate that it should be of any significant concern for us. We'll keep an eye on it, just in case!
