WEATHER SUMMARY FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2026

Overall our May average temperature has been cooling since my records began in 2021 with overnight lows warming but offset by daytime highs cooling at a faster rate. This May with a below average temperature continued that trend. My wind and rain records only go back to 2022 and this May was the wettest of those years but was fairly typical for wind.

The average temperature for the month was 54.3°F, slightly cooler than the 2011-2025 average of 54.5°. The overall range of average May temperatures for the years 2011 through 2025 has been from a low of 50° (2019) to a high of 58° (2015).

The coldest night this May was 35°F which was tied for the the 2nd warmest with 2024. The overall range of overnight lows for the years 2011 through 2025 has been from a low of 30° (2018) to a high of 36° (2021).

The warmest it got this May was 89°, which was the 6th warmest daytime high in my records. The overall range of daytime highs for the years 2011 through 2025 has been from a low of 71° (2019) to a high of 99° (2018).

This May’s 6.1 inches measured total precipitation was the highest total rainfall of the last 5 years and 2.5 inches above the 2022-2025 average of 3.6 inches.

The average wind speed over the month was 2.7 mph which was slightly lower than the average for 2022-2025 of 2.8 mph The maximum gust for the month was 31 mph which was above the 2022-2025 average of 28.3 and only exceeded by 2023’s 32 mph maximum.

As we expected this morning, we have had a little shower so far this afternoon. Looking at the radar on Accuweather, there is a band of heavy rain and probably thunderstorms northwest of Rumford that is moving southeastward. It is likely to arrive here late evening if it hangs together.

THE WEEK AHEAD, SUNDAY EDITION (05/31/26):

Brrrr… Last night’s low of 37° would be more typical for early May and it was certainly very cold for the end of the month! On the plus side, we missed out on the heavy rain and strongest winds as the expected storm tracked further south than forecast, and this coming week is expected to see more moderate weather conditions than we have had for the last several weeks.

TEMPERATURES: Today and tomorrow are still going to be cooler than normal for this time of year with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s, but a warming trend is expected after tomorrow with temperatures back up into the 70s by the end of the week. Next Saturday will likely be the warmest day with another round of cooling into the middle of next week.
PRECIPITATION: While we missed the heavy rain Friday night and Saturday, wet weather isn’t quite over yet. More rain and possibly a thunderstorm is expected later today and tonight with a few showers possible tomorrow and/or Tuesday. Total accumulation through Tuesday is expected to be between ¼ and ½ inch. While the rest of the workweek is likely to be dry, a shower or two and a little rain is possible on Saturday.

WINDS: Winds are expected to be generally in the 5-10 mph range for the next week or ten days. Gusts are expected to stay under 25 mph with most days under 20 mph over the same period.

MARINE FORECAST: There are no watches warnings or advisories in effect after the Gale Warning expired last night. Conditions today and during the first half of the week look much better than the last few days have been. Winds are expected to be around 10 kt through Wednesday with seas 2-3 feet today, 3 feet tomorrow and 2 feet Tuesday and Wednesday.

THE TROPICS: The official start to the 2026 hurricane season is almost upon us with no tropical cyclone activity expected through the first few days of the season.

Here in Boothbay we seem to have missed out on this storm. Winds at this location were about the same as earlier in the week with a maximum gust of 25 mph. Rainfall also was under expectations with a bit over 1/8 inch recorded almost all of which arrive before midnight.

Conditions should continue to improve today as the storm moves away but it will remain on the cool side, with a high in the low 50s expected, well under the norm for the date.

This may not be far off as far as rainfall for us. I am seeing around 1 inch +/- 0.25" this afternoon. Wind-wise we could see gusts in the vicinity of 40 mph coming from the east northeast shifting toward northeast as the wind eases through Saturday morning.

I said that there likely would be a marine watch, warning or advisory forthcoming and here it is...

A GALE WARNING has been issued for the period of 2 AM through 2 PM tomorrow, Saturday, 30 May 2026 due to northeast winds 25 to 35 kt with gusts up to 45 kt and seas 5 to 8 ft being expected.

You may have heard about the snow, but another hazard tonight into Saturday will be strong easterly wind gusts. Along the coast and inland to the I-93 corridor winds may gust up to 50 mph. Now that trees have leafed out, power outages will be possible. If you have outdoor celebrations planned this weekend, now is the time to make sure the equipment is secured.

05/27/2026

We're going into a cooler and showery pattern Thursday and through the weekend. Focusing more from late Friday into Saturday: a widespread soaking (and chilly) rain is looking likely with high elevation snow. Hikers should prepare for winter conditions above 3000 ft.

THE WEEK AHEAD, WEDNESDAY EDITION (05/27/26):

What a nice day we have had today and yesterday was pretty good too! Days like today and yesterday have not been common this spring. Unfortunately, we can expect deteriorating weather again tomorrow with Friday night and the first half of the weekend being quite nasty. Oh well!

For those that know me, they know that I am hard of hearing (very hard). I’ve had my current hearing aids for about 9 years and it is beyond time for a change to the newer technology and ones that actually fit my aging ears. One of the things that kept me away from the computer today, was to be fitted for new ones, and hopefully in 2 or 3 weeks I will be able to hear and understand conversations a bit better! Unfortunately, it won’t do anything to improve the accuracy of these posts!

TEMPERATURES: We need to remember that it still is spring and not summer! Today was nice and warm but temperatures will be cooling through Saturday when some areas are likely to only see lower 50s for a high. Monday may not be a lot better but we should be warming up again with 70°+ possible during the first half of next week. Overnight lows, while safe from frost, may dip into the upper 30s in spots Saturday and Sunday nights.
PRECIPITATION: Beginning tomorrow and continuing into the first half of next week we can expect showers and periods of rain. The rainiest periods are likely to be tomorrow, Friday night into Saturday and Sunday night into Monday. Total accumulation between tonight and Tuesday afternoon is expected to be in the range of 1½ to 1¾ inches.

WINDS: Winds are expected to be generally in the 10-15 mph range into Friday night when they are expected to increase to around 20 mph with gusts potentially around 40 mph during the wee hours of Saturday morning. With the exception of Friday night, and Monday and Tuesday when gusts maybe around 30 mph, gust should stay in the 20-25 mph range.

MARINE FORECAST: There are no watches warnings or advisories in effect; however, I do expect that to change for Saturday and perhaps Friday night. Conditions look decent through Friday but Saturday and Saturday night are expected to be quite nasty with winds of 30 kt and seas 4-5 feet during the day. While the wind may slacken to 20 kt Saturday night seas are expected to be around 5-6 feet. Winds are expected to drop to 10 kt on Sunday but seas probably will not ease below 4 feet.

THE TROPICS: The official start to the 2026 hurricane season is almost upon us with no tropical cyclone activity expected through the first few days of the season.
