We are nearly running out of bleak dystopian futures left to recreate in the real world. There are very few remaining imagined grim possible futures that have not already been reflected in reality. It feels as though most of the darkest speculative scenarios once described in fiction or prediction have gradually taken shape in real life, leaving fewer and fewer extreme futures that remain only in imagination. Almost every bleak scenario that once felt distant or hypothetical now appears closer to lived experience. The idea suggests a gradual narrowing of imagined dark possibilities that can still be translated into actual circumstances. What remains is a shrinking set of extreme future visions that have yet to be mirrored in society and even those feel increasingly unlikely to stay only theoretical. The overall sense is that humanity has already encountered or begun to experience many of the bleak outcomes once reserved for speculative futures. As a result there seems to be little left in terms of extreme dystopian possibilities that have not already been touched upon in real world developments leaving only minimal conceptual space for further dark imagined futures that might still emerge in thought alone continuing this pattern of reflection.
