MRA endurance race at High Plains Raceway in Colorado; an overdue update!
Within a 48 hour period over Thurs and Fri:
Plan A was an sv650, but it died and despite much effort to source parts it wasn't happening.
Plan B was a cbr600rr, but it was unhappy and overheating.
Plan C involved one of the guys buying an 05’ cbr600rr that was for sale locally.
Plan C turned out to be a gem of a bike once it was prepped and ready to go. It did great in practice on Friday. I was nervous riding a new-to-me bike. I'm so used to my rs660 twin and 600s are a totally different experience. But once I got used to it, I had a blast riding it. Sounded amazing too!
Race day, Sat: I felt great after settling my nerves in practice in the morning. I was rider two. First rider went out strong, but had a crash because of fuel getting on the rear wheel. Rider was okay and bike was okay after a crazy pit lane repair to replace a rearset and the rear master cylinder. At this point it was unclear to me what caused the fuel leak issue. I made a really difficult call to bow out; for safety and to respect a promise I made to myself and my family to evaluate risk appropriately in chaotic moments. Our remaining two riders finished out the race with no issues. They did AMAZING! So proud of them. We placed 19th out of 28 teams. Not bad considering the setbacks!
Afterwards the conclusion seemed to be that the fuel overflow wasn't piping into the belly pan correctly and it wasn’t an issue with the bike itself. I could have ridden just fine, but that's hindsight for you. I made a call and stuck to it, and at least the consequence was just me feeling sad and disappointed, and not anyone getting hurt. I can live with that.
Endurance racing is fun!
