Say WHAT?! Our pals over at Overdue Movie Reviews did a episode? This just jumped to the top of our to-do list.
Episode 7: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
One of the greatest Batman movies of all time happens to be an animated film, based on Batman: The Animated Series.
This animated, romantic, superhero film featured the DC Comics character Batman/Bruce Wayne (voiced by the late Kevin Conroy), his greatest villain The Joker (voiced by the unconquerable Mark Hamill) and features Dana Delany (who went on to voice Lois Lane in Superman: The Animated Series) as Bruce Wayne’s former lover and fiancée Andrea Beaumont. Stacy Keach as the voice of Andrea’s father Carl Beaumont, Abe Vigoda as Salvatore Valestra, Dick Miller as Chuckie Sol, John P. Ryan as Buzz Bronski and Hart Bochner as Arthur Reeves.
Also returning, from Batman: the animated series for this film, which was the first original theatrical film produced by Warner Bros. Animation, the first film in the DC Animated Universe and the only one released theatrically, were Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as Alfred Pennyworth, Bob Hastings as Commissioner James Gordon and Robert Costanzo as Detective Harvey Bullock.
It was directed by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm, written by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Martin Pasko, and Michael Reaves and featuring music composed by Shirley Walker. The end credit song "I Never Even Told You" was written by Siedah Garrett and Glen Ballard. It was performed by actress and singer Tia Carrere of Wayne’s World films and True Lies fame.
The events of the film take place between the first and second seasons of the series and follows Bruce reconciling with Andrea as Batman faces a mysterious vigilante who is murdering Gotham City's crime bosses. The story is inspired by Mike W. Barr's Batman: Year Two comic book story arc, but features an original antagonist, the Phantasm, in place of the Reaper, while also borrowing elements from the Batman: Year One graphic novel, recounting how Bruce Wayne became Batman and his first attempts to fight crime.
Tony saw this movie in theaters when it was released when he was 11 years old. Tad had the movie but just saw it recently. They decided to review this movie for several reasons: they love Batman, the recent passing (Nov. 10, 2022) of Kevin Conroy (who voiced Bruce Wayne/Batman for television, films, video games for over 30 years) and the upcoming 30th anniversary of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (December 25, 2023).
