Turkey Trots certainly aren’t the fastest race of the year, but they could be the most fun – even if you got talked into last minute by a run-loving family member. We think captures the vibe perfectly in a recent clip he shared. Does it make sense to mix road racing with excessive amounts of mashed potatoes and wine consumption, all on the same day? Not exactly, but at the very least, it makes for some magic memories. In fact, we want to hear your standout moments (both good and bad!) in the comment section our previous post. Whoever’s got the best story by the end of the weekend will receive a prize, so be sure to write in! To get the ball rolling, watch Matt’s hilarious clip here.

We never run out of good things to say about plyometrics. When they’re done safely, plyo workouts can improve explosiveness and running economy, all while building the durability of tendons like your achilles so you’re protected from injury. Like all high-intensity movements, it’s a good idea to start small, which is why we’re getting the ball rolling with this beginner’s plyo circuit from .

In our Sunday Long Run edition, we shared a story highlighting the beloved tradition of Turkey Trots. We hope that inspired you to sign up for your own Thanksgiving Day fun, but the joy doesn’t stop there – we’re hosting a contest to get our readers in action. All you’ve got to do is comment on this post with your best Turkey Trot moment. It could be a family tradition, a heartwarming story, or an embarrassing fail. You’ll be entering a “no judgment zone,” so brags and bloopers are applauded equally. We’ll call out some of our favorites in a future issue and we’ll even send an apple pie (local tradition here in Boston) or an SMM T-shirt to the best storytellers. Good luck out there and Happy Thanksgiving from all of us on the Six Minute Mile Team!

Between super-shoes and advanced biometrics, the modern landscape of distance running can feel overly complicated. At its core, however, the sport relies on simple grit and determination. One of our favorite films, McFarland USA, is a powerful reminder of those humble roots. For those who haven’t seen it, the movie tells the story of an underdog XC team rising to greatness, not unlike Coach Trax’s very own XC team that just won the Massachusetts state championship. If you need a spark today, this clip of Coach White’s pre-race speech always delivers.

In a recent Instagram clip, asked Charles Mammay his age, posing the question as: “How young are you?” Typically, folks in their 80s would show major signs of slowing down, but Charles is far from the typical 82 year old. He’s maintained a level of strength and agility that’s uncommon even for someone half his age, and he shares tips on diet and exercise that we’ll certainly be following in pursuit of our own longevity. If you want to be able to do 170 pushups and pullups a day in your 80s as well, check out the video.

Stuck in a hotel room with no gym in sight? That doesn't mean your strength work has to take a vacation. We found a great, simple bodyweight routine for runners that hits all the essentials – from squats and lunges to planks and pogo hops – no gear required. The creator, .mc.mahan, is even using this exact routine to prep for a sub-2:50 marathon attempt, so you know it’s legit. If you need some inspiration for your next no-gym day, go check out the full routine.

According to a recent clip from .lisa.dpt, the soleus produces a whopping 8.71x our bodyweight in force when we run. If you need an anatomy refresher, that's the muscle found in the lower calf, and clearly, it plays a huge role in our running performance. With all that force it’s got to generate, it’s no wonder that Lisa suggests adding weight or increasing the position difficulty when performing calf raises. Grab a dumbbell, yoga mat, and supportive wall to follow along with her routine to grow your soleus enough to make an impact.

With more than 59,226 finishers crossing the line, this year’s NYC Marathon broke the record for the largest marathon ever. Participation wasn’t the only record that was broken, though. It’s not often you see a genuine photo finish in a marathon, but Benson Kipruto's narrow victory over Alexander Mutiso was the closest gap ever in the history of the event – 0.03 seconds. Check out their dramatic showdown in this clip from .

If you’re a long time reader of our newsletter, you’ll know how much we love fitness tests to keep us in check. Either you knock 'em out the park and earn some bragging rights, or they reveal a weakness you’ve got to address. The latest test we’ve found comes from , who offers three moves to diagnose your lateral hip strength, calf strength, and single leg stability.

For endurance athletes, speed workouts can be the toughest day on your calendar – even if they’re completed on a flat surface like a track. But for ski mountaineer , that’s not hard enough. In a recent clip he shared on Instagram, the Swiss rising star tackled an uphill gravel path. To be honest, he probably ascended faster than we’d run it downhill. He was using trekking poles to add some upper body propulsion into the mix, and that inspired us to grab a pair and try our own trekking time trial this week.
