Limusaurus inaequalis was a small, slender theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic, around 160 million years ago, in what is now northwestern China. Fossils show that it lived in a warm, seasonally wet environment filled with lush vegetation.

Limusaurus reached roughly 1.5–1.7 meters (5–5.5 feet) in length and had a lightweight body, long powerful hind legs, short forelimbs, a long balancing tail, and a narrow skull with toothless adult jaws. Its body was built for fast bipedal movement rather than brute strength.

Its most unusual feature was its changing dentition. Young Limusaurus had teeth, but adults lost their teeth completely, developing a toothless beak-like mouth.

Even more surprising, this dramatic change happened as the animal matured—one of the strangest known transformations among theropod dinosaurs.

Dimorphodon macronyx was an unusual pterosaur that lived during the Early Jurassic, roughly 195 million years ago, in what is now Britain. Despite being a flying reptile, it was not built like a modern bird.

Its most striking feature was its enormous head compared with its compact body. It had a short neck, a deep skull with different types of teeth, relatively short and broad wings, strong limbs, and an exceptionally long tail that helped with balance and maneuvering. Its wings were formed by a skin membrane rather than feathers.

Dimorphodon’s exact diet remains debated, but its unusual jaws and body design show that it occupied a very different ecological niche from modern flying animals.

🦴 Kannemeyeria was a large herbivorous dicynodont that lived during the Middle Triassic, roughly 247–242 million years ago, across parts of ancient Pangaea, including what is now southern Africa and South America.

Growing to around 3 meters (10 feet) long, it had a massive barrel-shaped body supported by powerful limbs. Its enormous skull featured a blunt beak-like mouth and distinctive paired upper tusks, while its relatively short tail contrasted with its exceptionally bulky torso.

Kannemeyeria was a plant-eater adapted for processing tough vegetation with powerful jaw muscles and its specialized beak.

It was one of the important large herbivores of Triassic ecosystems, living during a period when dinosaurs were still only beginning their evolutionary story.

🪽 Nyctosaurus gracilis was a small flying reptile that lived during the Late Cretaceous, roughly 85 million years ago, over the ancient Western Interior Seaway covering what is now Kansas, North America. Its fossils are especially associated with the Niobrara Formation.

It had a wingspan of roughly 2–3 meters (6–10 feet), with long narrow wings, a lightweight body, slender neck and a long completely toothless beak. Unlike many pterosaurs, its hands were highly specialized for flight.

Its most spectacular feature was an enormous forked bony crest rising from the back of its skull, with two long projections extending upward and backward.

Scientists still debate exactly what this bizarre crest was used for, with display and species recognition among the leading possibilities.

🦖 Acrocanthosaurus atokensis was a gigantic carnivorous theropod that lived during the Early Cretaceous, roughly 115–105 million years ago, across parts of what is now the United States. Fossils are known from places including Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.

It inhabited ancient floodplain and river environments, where the largest individuals reached around 11–12 meters (36–39 feet) long. Its powerful body, long tail, three-clawed forelimbs and enormous skull made it a formidable predator.

Its most remarkable feature was the row of unusually tall vertebral spines running along much of its neck, back and hips, creating a powerful raised profile.

Scientists still debate exactly what these extraordinary spines were used for, making Acrocanthosaurus one of the strangest giant predators of its age.

🦖 Concavenator corcovatus was a roughly 6-meter carnivorous theropod that lived during the Early Cretaceous, around 130–125 million years ago, in what is now Cuenca, Spain. Its fossils were discovered at the famous Las Hoyas fossil site.

Las Hoyas preserved an ancient inland-lake ecosystem surrounded by lush vegetation. Concavenator had powerful hind legs, a long tail, sharp teeth and one extraordinary feature: two elongated vertebral spines created a distinctive hump above its hips.

Scientists originally proposed that unusual bumps on its forearm bones could represent quill k***s, suggesting feather-like structures, although this interpretation remains debated.

Even its strange hump remains scientifically mysterious, because researchers still cannot say exactly what it was used for.

🦠 Hallucigenia sparsa was a tiny and bizarre Cambrian animal that lived around 508 million years ago in the shallow seas of what is now British Columbia, Canada.

Its fossils are famous from the Burgess Shale, where this strange creature measured only about 5 centimeters long. Its slender body carried seven pairs of walking legs underneath and seven pairs of long defensive spines along its back, giving it one of the strangest silhouettes in the Cambrian fossil record.

Hallucigenia slowly crawled across the ancient seafloor, using its clawed legs while its spines likely helped protect its soft body. For decades, scientists even reconstructed the animal upside down before better fossils revealed which structures were legs and which were defensive spines.

🦴 Doedicurus clavicaudatus was one of the most heavily armored mammals of Ice Age South America, living during the Late Pleistocene until roughly 10,000 years ago. Its fossils are especially known from Argentina, Uruguay and neighboring regions.

Reaching around 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) long including its tail and weighing well over a tonne, Doedicurus had a huge domed body protected by thick bony armor. Its short powerful legs supported the massive body, while an exceptionally long muscular tail ended in a gigantic bony club covered with prominent projections.

This strange herbivore likely fed on grasses and other vegetation across open grasslands and woodland habitats. Its extraordinary tail was more than just decoration—it may have provided powerful defense against predators and rival animals.

🦏 Toxodon platensis was a massive South American mammal that lived during the Pleistocene into the early Holocene, roughly 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago, across much of South America.

It inhabited open grasslands, wetlands, and other varied environments. Reaching around 2.7 meters (9 feet) long and standing roughly 1.5 meters (5 feet) at the shoulder, Toxodon had a huge barrel-shaped body, short powerful legs, a large heavy head, and distinctive high-crowned teeth adapted for processing tough vegetation.

This herbivorous notoungulate likely fed on grasses and other plants. Despite its bulky, hippopotamus-like appearance, Toxodon was not a hippopotamus and belonged to an entirely different South American mammalian lineage.

One of its most fascinating facts is that Toxodon survived until the very end of the Ice Age, disappearing only thousands of years ago.

🦎 Nothosaurus was a Triassic marine reptile that lived roughly 240–210 million years ago, long before the giant marine reptiles of later eras.

Growing to around 3–4 meters (10–13 feet) in many forms, it had a long body, elongated neck, flattened skull, and narrow jaws lined with sharp teeth.

Its webbed feet and long tail helped it move through shallow coastal waters, while its limbs retained characteristics associated with life near land.

Nothosaurus was primarily a fish-eater, using its elongated jaws and prominent teeth to seize slippery aquatic prey.

Fossils show that nothosaurs inhabited shallow marine environments connected with the ancient Tethys region across parts of Europe, Asia, and surrounding areas.
