New Work!
100 years ago today, the 19th Amendment was added to the US Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote. This important but imperfect milestone was a result of an equal rights movement that Susan B. Anthony lead for decades. At age 17, she collected signatures for an anti-slavery petition. At age 32, she traveled the country alone, speaking out about women’s property rights and suffrage. At age 52, she was arrested for voting, and refused to pay the $100 fine. She died in 1906, and fourteen years later the 19th Amendment was signed into law. But restrictions that kept non-white men from voting were immediately applied to non-white women. It wasn’t until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that discrimination based on “race, color, or national origin” was prohibited and Black and Latinx women were finally granted the right to vote. Now 200 years after Susan B. Anthony was born and 100 years after the 19th Amendment was passed, voter suppression and discrimination is still widespread, undermining our democratic process. Head over to vote.org to see how you can register to vote in your state. Special thanks to and for making this project possible and reminding us that voting is a fundamental right, no matter who we are.
