NEW ISSUE ALERT!

I hope you’ll experience as much as possible this summer. Buy a piece of art on your summer vacation. Catch a dance or theatrical performance while you’re at it. Walk the grounds of New England Botanic at Tower Hill, home to the mesmerizing sculptures of George Sherwood and his Art in Motion exhibition. Wave Cloud is comprised of seven thousand stainless steel “sails” which work together to move the piece. That’s a lot of moving parts. I appreciate this metaphor and hope you all do as well. We must all work together to keep the arts moving forward. There will be kinks in the “sails” and some days you may wait a little longer for your “coffee” yet it’s worth it all in my book. —Rita A. THE MUSEUMS ISSUE

“There is beautiful art in this issue. We celebrate museums, remind you of their beauty and validity, and warn you that they’re under assault. Renew your memberships. Open new ones. Show up! Kayla Coleman, executive director of the New England Museum Association is a guest writer this issue. We can’t roll over because we’re exhausted by the news. If you blink, another grant will be gone. Another arts program, another residency. Use this issue as a planning tool for summer travel. Hit every destination in the Berkshires section. Buy a piece of art wherever you go, however small. Buy banned books at your local bookstore with pride.
There is gorgeous writing this issue: Julianna Thibodeaux delves into art and aging; Paige Farrell shares the story of Steven Law and Donald Stroud of Decouvert Fine Art, a love letter blending art, healing and poetry. Chris Volpe delves into the extraordinary work of Tracey Emin in YCBA’s exhibition “Loved You Until the Morning.” The cover means so much to me in this moment. I’m awestruck and in love and scared to death in the same moment. It’s political and so good and I want to talk about it. I want to live in a world where it’s ok to feel everything this image invokes.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of illustrator Rob Stull

The Boston native was recently featured in Art New England’s third issue of the AEROSOL series (Nov/Dec 2024) and participated in two exhibits “AEROSOL: Boston’s Graffiti DNA, its Origin & Evolution” honoring his contributions in the early graffiti movement.

His AEROSOL family is honored for the opportunity to add to his legacy.

It was such a pleasure to hear Stephen DiRado present his life’s work during his artist talk on Saturday at the Fitchburg Art Museum. He has several bodies of work that spans across decades, including works in his hometown of Worcester, MA and his time spent on Martha’s Vineyard. He is a remarkable teacher and mentor, having taught at Clark University since 1982.

“Throughout his career, DiRado has worked in series, usually spanning many years and involving thousands of images, representing communities of people in Worcester and Martha’s Vineyard. His photographic practice is intimately intertwined with his life – DiRado carries a camera everywhere and makes photographs every day. He operates within many of the great art historical traditions – portraiture, landscape, still life, and the n**e. Through an aesthetic that combines realism and symbolism, he evokes deep human emotions like joy, melancholy, boredom, sensuality, vulnerability, compassion, and most of all, love.” (via FAM website)

The March/April issue of Art New England just dropped!

You’re invited to the opening on January 31st, from 5:30 -7pm at the Knox Gallery inside of the Monterey Library, it’s a show of paintings called “Abstract Memories” and because of the recent fires, they’ve decided to turn their art show into a fundraiser for two organizations: emergency funding for LA Firefighters https://supportlafd.org/ and the Community Foundation https://www.calfund.org/ to help fire survivors!

25% of all art sales will benefit those two organizations, and another 25% will be donated to Friends of the Monterey Library.

Man Rising
The journey of an artist’s pièce de résistance and the patron who made it happen

“A modern-day Picasso! Or a Brancusi or Umberto Boccioni!” exclaimed the patron, rallying support for his beloved artist. He looked straight at us and further declared, “He’s simply the most marvelously talented sculptor one’s ever seen.” The patron is an 85-year-old rheumatologist, small in stature and big in personality. Sprite, bright-eyed, donning a large medical Rod of Asclepius medallion on a thick silver chain around his neck; he is high-spirited when he speaks about everything from human anatomy and unmet medical needs to geopolitical issues but especially, about art. He speaks as expansively about Guernica as he does about appendectomies.

And with that, a new issue of ANE is released…

“This issue celebrates Shelburne’s new (and incredible) Perry Center for Native American Art, written by Cynthia Close; highlights art galleries in New England’s preparatory schools by Eve O. Schaub (the first installment of a longer series); and chronicles the fascinating journey of Matthias Alfen’s sculpture “Man Rising” to its new home in Connecticut. This feature is written by another new voice to the magazine Nona Footz, whose first-hand perspective and first-person narrative elevates her storytelling. It’s an enchanting tale, tinged with magic and synchronicity. Carl Little travels us to Monhegan Island; Jennifer Mancuso delves deeper into her Aerosol series (the exhibition of which is reviewed this issue by Asata Radcliffe); and Paige Farrell, herself a ceramicist, takes us into the studio of Cape Ann potter Cynthia Curtis. This year we’ll visit more pottery studios and learn more about this serious yet serene form of sculpture-making.

I think Jay Critchley makes a particularly riveting piece of sculpture on this, his second “Art New England” cover. Susan Rand Brown takes us into Critchley’s exhibition at Montserrat College of Art opening later this month addressing what it means to be an American and how control of and access to the “Land” defines our personal and cultural identities. “Boston’s Graffiti DNA, its Origin & Evolution”

This incredible show was curated by ANE’s talented contributing writer, Jennifer Mancuso. The show opens tonight at ShowUp (524B Harrison Ave, Boston). The exhibit is a culmination of Mancuso’s ongoing series on the history and origins of Graffiti art and artists in the Boston area that she has written for Art New England. Be sure to stop in.

The show features works by Barrington “Vex” Edwards, Chepe “Sane” Leña, David “DS7” Taylor, Ricardo “Deme5” Gomez, Rob “Note” Stull, Shea Justice, Thomas “Kwest” Burns, and Timmy “Zone” Allen.
