Some books entertain.⠀

Some books inform.⠀

And some books make you want to start a conversation.⠀

📖 My Friend the Spy by Roberta Seret belongs to the third category.⠀

Blending fiction with contemporary political realities, the novel takes readers from the United Nations to Belarus and Mexico, exploring friendship, loyalty, espionage, and the human stories hidden behind headlines.⠀

What makes this book especially compelling is that it doesn't simply tell a story—it invites readers to ask questions.⠀

▪️ How do political systems shape personal lives?⠀

▪️ Can friendship bridge ideological divides?⠀

▪️ What happens when private relationships collide with global events?⠀

To help readers explore these themes, the author has also created a Reader's Guide, making the novel particularly well suited for book clubs, classroom discussions, and community reading groups.⠀

📚 Discussion questions, background materials, and additional resources:⠀

If your book club enjoys novels that spark conversation, this may be your next read.⠀

June 6 marks the birthday of Alexander Pushkin, often called the founder of modern Russian literature.⠀

More than two centuries later, his influence can still be felt in literature, theater, music, film, and scholarship around the world.⠀

Russians often describe Pushkin with a simple phrase:⠀

"Pushkin is our everything."⠀

Yet the phrase is difficult to translate. It doesn't simply mean that Pushkin was a great writer. It means he became something larger: a symbol of language, culture, creativity, and national imagination.⠀

To celebrate Pushkin's birthday, we're highlighting several Academic Studies Press titles that explore Russian literature and the cultural worlds shaped by his enduring legacy.⠀

📚 Who is the "Pushkin" of your culture?⠀

✨ What does it mean to accept divine law?
✨ How can ancient texts inspire new stories and fresh interpretations?

From biblical narratives and midrash to Jewish customs, law, and the meaning of sacred time, these books invite readers to engage with Jewish thought through scholarship, creativity, and curiosity.

Behind today's Translation as Resistance event is something larger — a publishing commitment we've been building for years. Our Ukrainian Studies Series, edited by Vitaly Chernetsky of the University of Kansas, exists because Ukrainian literature, history, and culture deserve a permanent home in English-language scholarship.

The series spans literature, intellectual history, film, gender studies, art history, folklore, musicology, and more. It also publishes translations of major Ukrainian poetry and prose that were previously unavailable in English — work that makes cultural memory and historical testimony accessible far beyond the field of specialists.

Two of those translations are the focus of today's event: Ukrainian Sunrise by Kateryna Zarembo and War from the Rear by Andriy Lyubka. One captures life in eastern Ukraine before the full-scale invasion. The other documents the war from inside. Both were carried into English by translators who understood that this work couldn't wait.

At a time when language, memory, and cultural presence are inseparable from survival, translation is one of the most concrete things a publisher can do.
