Yarmouth, MA – Community members gathered at Smugglers Beach on Saturday to observe National Overdose Awareness Day, a solemn event dedicated to honoring the lives lost to overdoses and raising awareness about the ongoing opioid crisis.

The annual gathering is organized by a local mother who lost her son to an accidental overdose and has since dedicated herself to helping others through education, advocacy, and support. Each year, the event brings together families, friends, first responders, and community leaders in a collective effort to remember loved ones and take action against the stigma surrounding addiction.

Speakers included State Representative Steve Xiarhos, Yarmouth Police Chief Kevin Lennon, and other community leaders who emphasized the importance of compassion, prevention, and treatment. They called on the community to continue working together to break down barriers and offer hope to those struggling.

Family members also shared deeply personal stories of their loved ones lost to overdoses, creating a powerful reminder of the human toll of addiction on Cape Cod and across the nation.

Local advocacy groups and resource organizations were present to connect individuals and families with services, including treatment and recovery options. Free doses of Narcan, a medication that reverses opioid overdoses, were distributed to attendees, underscoring the event’s life-saving mission.

BUZZARDS BAY, MA – At approximately 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 30th, a large motor yacht experienced a loss of propulsion while entering the west end of the Cape Cod Canal near the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

With no engine power, the strong eastbound current carried the nearly 100-foot, 120-ton vessel into the land cut, forcing it sideways and then stern-first. The yacht narrowly missed striking the Buzzards Bay side of the Cape Cod Railroad Bridge before continuing to drift eastward toward the canal banks.

After several tense minutes in the swift five-knot current, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Canal Patrol and Wareham Department of Natural Resources Officers arrived on scene. Canal Patrol crews successfully secured a towline to the vessel, while Wareham officers boarded from the stern to assist the crew in regaining control.

Thanks to the coordinated response, the yacht was stabilized and safely towed without injuries or further incident.
