When my 15-year-old daughter, Lucy, came home that Friday with red, puffy eyes, I knew something was wrong. She had spent the week babysitting for our neighbor, Mrs. Carpenter, who promised her $11 an hour.

"What happened, Lucy?" I asked, trying to stay calm.

"Mrs. Carpenter... she didn't pay me," Lucy whispered.

"What do you mean she didn't pay you?"

"She said IT WAS A 'LIFE LESSON,'" Lucy sniffled. "'You should always get things in writing. Never trust someone’s word!' And then she slammed the door in my face."

"She said what?" My voice cracked, disbelief giving way to fury.

"She said that babysitting should have taught me hard work, and THAT WAS PAYMENT ENOUGH."

My hands clenched into fists. "How much was she supposed to pay you?" I asked.

Lucy sniffled, "I babysat for four hours each day for five days… so that’s $220."

I’ve been working for my dad’s construction company since I was 15. Not by choice, but because I had to. "Earn your keep" was his favorite line. I paid actual rent as a teen. He married my mom when I was 10, and from that day on, it felt like I was more of a tenant than family. But I put my head down and worked hard, thinking one day it’d pay off.
But then David, his biological son, suddenly reappeared. He’d been gone for years, blaming Dad for his mom’s affair. Now, fresh out of college with a fancy construction management degree, he wanted in. But I never saw what was coming.

At 39, I had experienced several long-term relationships, yet none had felt right. I was already disillusioned with love when my father's friend, Steve, came to visit one day.

Greg, exhausted after a day at the construction site, was on his way home when a woman holding a baby caught his eye at the station. "COULD YOU PLEASE LEND ME SOME MONEY FOR A TICKET?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Greg hesitated, feeling the weight of his salary in his pocket. He'd seen people like this before, but something about this woman felt different. She was well-dressed yet slightly out of season, she looked weary, and the baby — no more than three — was neatly bundled.

Against his better judgment, Greg decided to help. He took her to a café, and in a moment of generosity, handed her his entire paycheck, meant for his kids' education.
