U.S. Hockey Report The U.S. Hockey Report Provides Exclusive Amateur Hockey News Reporting & Scouting Services in the U Hockey Report.

We started out in 1994 as the New England Hockey Report, a monthly scouting newsletter. With the rise of the world wide web in the late 90s we launched our first website at www.ushr.com, the official site of the U.S. During the winter months we provide exclusive coverage of New England Prep Hockey and related elite prep hockey teams in North America. USHR serves as the central repository of NE Pre

p Hockey team rosters, schedules, game results, scoring/goaltending stats, aggregated stat leaders, league standings, and power rankings. We are fortunate to count among our subscribers most NHL teams, most elite DI collegiate programs, NESCAC schools, player agents, families with children playing amateur hockey, amateur hockey enthusiasts, and...perhaps you ;-)

If you found it somewhere else, they found it first on www.ushr.com -- we are the Inside Word on Amateur Hockey.

Mercuri Propels Salisbury to Flood-Marr Title

Dedham, Mass. -- Salisbury junior forward Lucas Mercuri, a UVM recruit who was playing Quebec Midget AAA hockey at this time last year, scored all four of his team's goals as the Knights made a statement here, topping a game Andover squad, 4-3, to take home Salisbury's sixth Flood-Marr title in the last 15 years.

In doing so, they quieted the critics.

Longtime prep hockey observers were wondering what was happening in the second week of the season when the Knights bowed to Millbrook, 8-5, and Hotchkiss, 7-1. Two consecutive losses -- and uncharacteristic ones at that.

"We've been looking for stability in net," Salisbury head coach Andrew Will said. "Nick Haas had two shutouts here, and Jared Levine played great against Deerfield. We need our goalies to come up big when we need it."

That they did. The Knights allowed only one goal over the three Flood-Marr games leading into the title game, and appear to be back on the beam.

Mercuri, the tournament MVP, was...

Five-Goal Outburst Propels Dexter to Groton-Lawrence Title

Groton, Mass. -- Dexter exploded for five goals in the second period and rode the solid goaltending of tournament MVP Derek Mullahy to capture the 45th Annual Groton/Lawrence Tournament Championship with a 7-2 victory over Proctor on Sunday.

Down 1-0 entering the second period, Dexter wasted no time in evening the score, as a Proctor defensive miscue allowed the puck to sq**rt loose into the slot where Dexter junior forward Aidan Connolly pounced on it, poking it past Proctor goaltender Cole Chingras at the 13 second mark. And from there the floodgates opened wide. With Proctor on the power play, speedy junior Chase McInnis, a Northeastern recruit, broke down the right side, blew past the Proctor defense, and...

Playoff Seedings
https://www.ushr.com/neprep/playoffs/seedings

This is the earliest we've done this. Usually, we've waited until after the holiday tournaments are complete, and started running them then. The reason we waited was to allow the database to reach a point at which there were enough games for it to become meaningful. Right now, the numbers are still bouncing around like Mexican Jumping Beans. But meaningful is a relative term, and one that people who've seen the early fluctuations are familiar with. Besides, it's fun to watch.

If the regular season ended this morning, the #1 seeds would be...

Belmont, Mass. -- Lawrence Academy junior forward Sam Colangelo, a Northeastern recruit from Stoneham, Mass., notched a hat trick -- capped off by the GWG in OT -- to lead the Spartans to a 4-3 road win over Belmont Hill here today.

The winning goal came just 47 seconds into overtime. Belmont Hill had the momentum, tying the game at 3-3 with three minutes to go in regulation. But it didn't take long for LA to answer. Senior C Ethan Bastien, working the corner, got the puck to senior Connor Sweeney behind the goal line. Sweeney made a perfect pass out front to Colangelo, who was charging down the slot and only had to bang it past Belmont Hill sophomore goaltender Michael Hauswirth.

LA had to contend with numerous penalties in this game, as they were called for eight, as opposed to Bel Hill's four.

But Lawrence has a top line...

Recently, two games ended in 0-0 ties: BU at BC last Saturday and, three days earlier, in a prep game, Berkshire traveled to Albany Academy and also played to a 0-0 stalemate.

Since prep hockey is our main beat, we wondered exactly how often 0-0 games crop up. So we researched it, and found that, over the last 15 years, 23 NEPSIHA games ended 0-0. If you add in a few Christmas tournament games between NEPSIHA teams and non-NEPSIHA teams -- specifically, UCC, Northwwood, and Nichols -- that number rises to 26. That works out to less than 1.5 games per year. Over the last three seasons, there have been two every year. In some years -- '10-11, '11-12, '14-15 -- there were none.

In addition to Albany's Kyle Penton and Berkshire's Jed Ballioti, who, in the above-mentioned game, shut each other out on Wed. Nov. 28th, active prep goalies who played in a 0-0 game are...

Brookline, Mass. -- Every season there are a few games that, like the 1968 Harvard-Yale football game, finish in a tie, but everyone leaves the building a winner.

That's the way it was here today, as Exeter senior LW Garrett Foster, who looks like Samson but battles like Spartacus, scored a goal with 6.2 seconds left in regulation and the extra attacker on to lift Exeter to a 2-2 road tie at Dexter.

The only down note today was an injury to Dexter star center John Farinacci who, in the first minute of the game was hit cleanly, but had to be helped off the ice with a Charley horse. Later in the first period, Farinacci was tripped, fell into the end boards, and had to leave the game. As of now, consider the Harvard recruit day-to-day with a shoulder injury. He will be evaluated tomorrow.

In the Dexter room, after the first period, Farinacci's linemate, junior Chase McInnis, rallied the troops, who...

Of the 14 teams this typist saw Monday at the Berkshire and Hotchkiss Jamborees, Northwood and Salisbury were a clear notch above.

Northwood (22-3-3) has been playing games since mid-September, so were in mid-season form. Head coach Chad Cassidy, now in his first year, says it's the deepest team he's had since his first year at Northwood. "Our speed," he says, "makes us difficult to play against."

At Berkshire, Northwood's puck movement, passing skills, and 200-foot game made it extremely difficult for opponents to establish -- and sustain -- offensive pressure. Maybe later; certainly not now. Northwood beat Kent, 6-1, and blanked host Berkshire, 6-0.

Of the team's four committed players, three -- LW Tommy Bannister, RW Cody Monds, and LD Jared Lambright -- are headed to St. Lawrence. The fourth, C Reid Leibold, is headed to RPI. All of those players are juniors. So is Lambright, as is his defense partner, junior Nate Boak, a 5'8", 159 pounder who makes up what he lacks in size through quick feet, a quick stick, smarts and a strong head for the game.

Second line RW Daniel Colabufo, a new junior, was also quite noticeable. So was 6'5", 207 lb. senior...

St. Andrew's College, now 10-0-0, is further into its season than any New England prep schools, so we don't want to read too much into a 4-1 win over a still-in-tryouts Belmont Hill squad, but David Manning's squad is a tough out. And will be no matter whom they face this season.

Belmont Hill came out hard and played a very strong, highly-competive first period, after which they led 1-0 on a PPG scored by diminutive LC Liam Kelly, on a tip of a Brett Bliss shot.

But in the second, SAC's depth just started wearing Belmont Hill down. RW Ethan Landry, an 11th grader, tied the game at 1-1 and LD Liam Cavan made it 2-1 on a PPG.

In the third, RW Brendan Bowie scored on a bar-down shot to make it 3-1 and Cavan scored again on a one-timer for the final margin of 4-1. The visitors from Ontario pretty much had their way with their hosts in the third period. Belmont Hill was unable to muster a single odd-man rush in the final frame.

For SAC, new 11th grade...

Salisbury's McGrath Blanks Taft in Opener

Watertown, Conn. -- In opening day action for both teams, Salisbury, behind a shutout from former Roxbury Latin goaltender Bryan McGrath, blanked host Taft, 4-0.

The game marked the coaching debut of Taft's Ryan Shannon, an '01 alum who went on to play four years at Boston College before going on to a lengthy pro career that included a Stanley Cup Championship with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007. Shannon takes the place of Dan Murphy, who, after 13 years behind the Rhinos' bench, has moved on to coach St. Paul's.

It's early, but both teams look better than last season. Salisbury may have lost underclassmen Tyce Thompson (Dubuque -- USHL) and Johnny Beecher (NTDP), but all their returnees are a year older, they have a deeper squad up front, on defense, and in goal. Plus they have scoring spread over four lines. They will be contending for another title.

Taft is led up front by 6'0" senior center and co-captain Jordan Tonelli, a Brown recruit who looks faster and stronger, and on D by new sophomore Christian Jimenez, a Harvard recruit from the Westchester Selects, and Billy Dobensky, a junior co-captain.

Salisbury got its first goal of the season at 10:21 of the first when...

Belmont Hill Jamboree
8:30 am -- Proctor Academy 2, Belmont Hill 1 -- David Netburn and Ronan Walsh scored for Proctor.

10:00 am -- Winchendon 4, St. Mark's 1 -- St. Mark's went up 1-0 early on a goal by Gibbons, but Winchendon answered with four straight. Leading the way were Matt Fawcett (2g, 1a), Ryan Black (3a), Cam Gendron (1g,1a), and Danny Cavanagh (1g).

11:30 am -- St. Andrew's College 8, Proctor Academy 2 -- Brendan Bowie (2g,2a), Matthew McKim (3a), Ian MacLean (2g). Evan McIntyre (1g,1a), Mark Hillier (1g,1a), and Thomas Munro (2a) all had multiple points for St. Andrew's.

1:00 pm -- Winchendon 5, Belmont Hill 2 -- Ryan Black (2g,1a), Ville Rainio (1g,1a), Danny Allen (1g,1a), Cam Gendron (1g,1a), Matt Fawcett (2a) led the way for Winchendon. Grant and Khozozian scored for Bel Hill.

2:30 pm -- St. Andrew's College 6, St. Mark's 0

Notes:

Belmont Hill: Losing Christian O'Neill (Omaha/Princeton) and Sam Hesler (Wenatchee/Dartmouth), each of whom had 19 goals last season, is a huge loss up front -- and finding that kind of scoring is difficult. Up front, we thought senior center Noah Traylor played with a lot of energy and his linemate junior Mike Holland we noted a bit too. The defense will be a strength, with James Perullo leading the way. Todd Copeland, a 6'7" right shot, has been converted to D this year, and it will be interesting to see how he progresses during the course of the season. Goaltending, with Connor Hopkins (Yale) and Jack Eselius, is also strength. If the Hillies can find the scoring they could be in the hunt again, but that's a big if.

Proctor: With USHR Prep Player of the Year Reilly Walsh off to Harvard, the Hornets have a vastly different look this season. Also lost to graduation is Matt Slick (Chilliwack) who provided solid defensive cover for Walsh's end-to-end rushes, and leading scorer Tate Singleton (Army). The top returning scorer is senior center Cole Joslin and not far behind him is...

NHL Central Scouting Players to Watch List

NHL Central Scouting Service released its new Players to Watch List today. It's a lengthy document. Pages 1-14 are for US/Canada. Pages 15-22 cover the European Leagues. It's a little thin on the New England Preps and Minnesota High School, as those leagues haven't gotten cranked up yet. That should change with the next list.

Four current or former New England prep players recieved an "A" or "B" ranking. They are RW Oliver Wahlstrom (NTDP/Harvard), who is an "A". The three who...

Exeter Hockey Carries on in Post-Dennehy Era

Exeter faced off at home tonight against Kents Hill in the season opener for both teams, a 5-1 decision for Exeter.

Missing, after 46 years behind the Exeter bench, was Bill Dennehy.

Dennehy started coaching at Exeter shortly after graduating from Springfield College, which he had helped lead to the Div. II College World Series crown. As for hockey, he started with the JV hockey team at Exeter in 1971-72, then became an assistant to George Crowe with the varsity. When Crowe replaced Grant Standbrook as head coach at Dartmouth in the fall of 1975, Dennehy became head coach at Exeter, staying in that position until 1992 when he reversed roles by handing off the position to Dana Barbin, then his assistant. Dennehy continued as Barbin's assistant for 25 years. And in that quarter century, Barbin himself became one of the longest-tenured coaches in prep hockey.

"I've never coached without him," Barbin said. "Twenty-five years. His not being here is going to be strange for me. The greatest thing is I always knew I had Bill's trust and loyalty. He had my back."

In addition to hockey, Dennehy was the...
