It’s that time of the year when college and professional football dominate the sports landscape. Now the focus is on the NCAA Division I College Football Playoff Final Four. Following the controversy over the final selections to the 12-team field, the squads that made it to the postseason party put on a show.

The top-seeded Indiana Hoosiers lived up to their No. 1 regular-season national ranking, putting a woodshed beating on the No. 9 Alabama Crimson Tide, 38-3. The upset-minded fifth-ranked Oregon Ducks shut out fourth-ranked Texas Tech 23-0, setting up a rematch with the Hoosiers, who beat them 30-20 on October 11 in Eugene. The Ducks, since that loss, are 6-0 and had their first playoff shutout since 1917.

Boston-born violinist Thomas Cooper will take the stage with the Boston Landmarks Orchestra for two free concerts in Jamaica Plain and Dorchester to ring in 2026. Black talent is at the heart of this program. The orchestra will perform works by Black composers, as well as others, spanning 1775 to 2019.

Performing free concerts at the start of the year has become a tradition of the orchestra. It has previously performed concerts centered on Three Kings Day, a celebration of the magi that is popular in Latin American communities, and reflections on renewal.

With economic uncertainty high, many are hesitant to take a risk with the money they do have by making investments. But that doesn’t mean one should shy away from the conversation altogether.

So why do people “invest in the stock market,” or purchase shares of a company?

The swift fall of Nicolas Maduro, from Venezuela’s dancing president to America’s shackled prisoner, is the latest episode in Donald Trump’s reality TV series — the highest-level sacking in the history of “You’re fired!”

Framed as a law-enforcement action to bring the authoritarian Venezuelan to justice for drug-dealing, the stunning military operation that snatched Maduro from a Caracas army compound had the added benefit, for Trump, of paving the way for U.S. control of the Latin American nation’s vast oil reserves. Which brings us to another TV celebrity, the late comedian George Carlin, who once said, “America is an oil company with an army.”

When the Paige Academy community gathered at the campus’s three buildings on Dec. 31 to ring in the new year, Angela Paige Cook, one of the school’s founders, used the opportunity to share her thoughts on the values of Kwanzaa, which ended New Year’s Day.

The seven principles — unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith — were at the heart of Cook’s message, who in 1975 opened the school alongside husband Joe Cook and six others, as well as the school’s educational philosophy in general.

On a June afternoon in Eugene, Oregon, the women’s 100-meter at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships came down to the kind of margin that forces even the most seasoned track fans to blink and look again. University of Southern California sprinter Samirah Moody leaned at the line and stopped the clock at 11.14 seconds. The official separation between gold and silver: three-thousandths of a second.

For the Greater Boston area, the headline wasn’t just that a Trojan won a national title. It was who won it; a Randolph, Massachusetts, native, an alum of Buckingham Browne & Nichols who came up through the MetroCobras club scene and broke records under the guidance of coach Saleena Rashed, learning early what it meant to chase the next 10th of a second.

Catherine Russell is a jazz icon. Born into a musical family to big-band pianist Luis Russell and Julliard-trained vocalist Carline Ray, Russell has produced 10 albums, guest starred on dozens more and toured with musicians like David Bowie and the band Steely Dan.

In the past year she’s been touring heavily, promoting her latest album “My Ideal,” made with musician Sean Mason. She’s also the featured vocalist on the 2025 Colin Hancock album Cat & The Hounds with a big band, old-school feel. She’ll be ringing in New Year’s Eve here in Boston, performing at Regattabar in Harvard Square.

The Banner chatted with Russell by phone about her musical history and recent work.

“Memory” is one of the greatest gifts human beings have in their lifetime. I ask Banner readers to delve into their memory banks and revisit the following article from the December 13, 2023, edition of this paper.

That was the year that the Dorchester Elite Eagles made history by becoming the First team from the Boston area to win a National Championship in Pop Warner Competition.

After serving six years in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, Haywood Fennell Sr. found the transition back to civilian life to be tough.

When Fennell returned home, he had to learn to navigate family obligations while managing the negative impact of some of the more challenging things he experienced in the military — inequity, racism and the contradicting narratives in the U.S. media questioning the war he fought.
